Under ideal conditions, I don't doubt the Oehler claims. When is shooting outdoors ideal conditions? Time of day, angle of sun, ambient light amount, clouds, battery strength, yada, yada, yada. It is far from an exact science.
What doesn't change is where the hole in the paper is. If the groups are consistently tight, who cares about the rest of the paper data. Irrelevant.
If the groups are the pits, that paper data can help diagnose what is wrong. I doubt you will see much problems given the quality of barrel you are using. There is little reason to doubt that this rig can hold 1" at 300yds for 4 to 5rds, if you do your part (be aware of barrel heat). Again, not one hummer group but the average which puts it in very good company.
Shoot over the chronie at LR. Collect the data but don't focus on it. Relate the hole in the paper with the data (very important to spot every shot). If a shot is off and the data is also off, then there is a point to watch. If the shot is on but the data is a bit off, who cares. Just make sure your groups are consistent and repeatable.
Shoot under the calmest conditions you can - use flags and lots of them. 200yds is where I start my load development then confirm at 300/350yds. You want small ROUND groups with no flyers. If the rifle throws flyers, figure out why. All shots count!
I have been playing with so many other projects, the 338 Mystic still hasn't made noise. I expect to see 3000 to 3100fps with the 300gr MK given the 35" barrel.
Right now the focus is my 223 which needs a stock or two.
