CZ 75B Two Tone Discolouring

Hi guys,

I just opened my safe up for the first time in two weeks, and was horrified to find that my CZ 75b has some discolouring around the grip. It is a two tone, so it is silver in colour, and below the trigger guard and on the backstrap (where ones hand would be holding the pistol) it has turned a dark grey colour. :eek:

I am guessing that sweat had something to do with it, but I had believed that the finish on the CZ's was really good, and would not wear or stain like this.

I have tried wiping a patch with a little cleaner on it, nothing... and oil did nothing as well. :(

Anyone seen this before, and how do I fix it?

Is it the Nickel part that has discoloured?
If so you might want to consider something like brasso. Note: Do so at your own risk, I assume no liability etc etc.....

Yes, it is the Nickel part, and I have never heard of brasso. Is it a metal polish?

It is stained good, as my bore cleaner did nothing. I think I will try the eraser next, as it may be easiest thing to try.

This is my first pistol that is not black, is this a common problem with Nickel finished guns?

The rest of the frame seems fine, it is just where my hand has been. I suppose I will have to start cleaning it after handling now. :(

I think I will contact CZ next and see what they say.

Yes Brasso is a metal polish. If the nickel has tarnished, it will remove the tarnish. I'm a fan of stainless steel myself. Easy to clean and care for.

Thanks, it is tarnished for sure, so I will have to find Brasso. I sent an email to CZ asking what they recommend, but I am sure it will be something very similier.

What a pain, my next gun will be stainless for sure.

You probably have an abnormaly high acid content in your skin. Similar to some women that can't wear cheap jewelery or it turns green.

You may have to have your pistol gold plated. ;)

I agree, that is likely the problem. I'm not sure gold plating would suit me though, I am not a "flashy" kinda guy! :)

I just need to find out now how to prevent the problem from happening again.

Well, I was speaking with Bill from the CK Gun Room here in London, he recommended using VIM to remove the stain, and it worked great! Also, it is a cheap and easy fix.

I would recommend Vim for a gentle but abrasive cleaning, as it worked great to remove the stain from the Nickel plating, and now my CZ smells of lemons! :)

Also Bill recommended using car wax to protect it, and all firearms for that matter. It works great, and is cheap and easy to apply. It is not slippery once it's buffed in, and should protect the finish.

I am looking forward to using it waxed, and see if it makes a difference when my hand starts to sweat. I wonder if it will get slimy... although I have been told it will not.

If I have any problems with the wax I will post it, but so far it seems great! The only downside is getting the excess out of the groves and small places... just like on the car!

Stay away from Brasso, Flitz and other metal polishers! The nickel plating on your gun is fairly thin, so you're running a risk of stripping it off completely.

The last thing I do after I clean or handle my firearms is rub them down with one of CLP/LP/Collector (or use any similar oil protector). I rub/buff them with a big terry cloth towel and put them in to my safe without touching them with my bare hands (hold them with the towel, and place them on the shelf/rack).

I don't have to worry about skin oils/acids then if it happens to be a long time between uses.

Next time you want to remove a stain, try a bit of bicarbonate of soda (Cow Brand) with a bit of water. Mix into a paste, use a bit on a rag and rub in a circular motion. It is very gentle on the finish. Some people brush their teeth with it. :D
 
Thanks for all the advice, I love this site!

I have heard many mixed feelings on Brasso and Flitz, about it removing too much of the finish, so I think I will be avoiding them. I have a habit of overdoing things, so I needed to find a very gentle abrasive that I could apply and work in slowly, without overdoing it too fast.

I really liked the Vim! It worked great, and smells like lemons!

Marlin60, I think you are doing it right, and if I had a higher priced gun, or a collection, I would be using a cloth to place them in the safe after protecting them as well. But my lowly CZ 75B, normally gets lots of attention, and to clean and protect it every time it gets handled, I think I would go nuts. I have waxed it now, and I will see how well that protects it. If I still have problems, I will have to follow your method, as I am certain that would do it.

I was wondering if anyone else has used car wax as to protect a barrel from corrosion (external only)? I just waxed my Rem 597 barrel (blued) and I am happy with the results. You cannot tell the wax is on it, except when you splash water on the barrel, it runs right off. Does not even get wet!

I am a bit an*l about my guns..but they were a long time in coming.

I might have to try this wax thing myself, too.
 
Hey if Vim works that would be great.

For my stainless firearms I use G96 as a metal conditioner. It protects the metal very well. I've never had a nickel plated one, so I don't know how it would work with a metal conditioner.

Lots of good ideas though.

Vim worked great! And like I said, the best part was the lemon fresh scent!

It removed the stain easily, and was gentle enough to not allow me to over do it.

Also, $2.50 for a bottle big enough to do all my guns 20 times, and clean the bathroom for 6 months was a nice bonus! :)
