Hello all,

Just showing some pics of my new CZ 858-2 rifle I picked up the other day.

Cheap cartridges and some good praise from some fellow gunnutz made me go for this rifle. I needed something to tie me over until Slowsale Sports in Cowtown finally brings in my 700P TWS.

First pic is of the rifle set up in front of my computer. Comes with four thirty round clips, bayonet, cleaning kit, manual(in english), and leather pouch to carry clips.

The rifle is pretty light as to what you might think. I thought it would be heavy but the stock (if you can call it that) is hollow and made of somekind of osb type of material that I have never seen before.

After an initial cleaning the rifle looks pretty good. When I first looked at it at the store I had to wash my hands as CZ cakes on the oil. Didnt notice much grease but they make sure it is well oiled.

With bayo installed.

I would have taken more pictures of the rifle but my camera died on me. One more thing to pack to the range - the list is growing.

I wanted to take some pictures of the cotton patches that I have sent through the barrel when I first got the CZ.

The first pass was with some plain old G96 gun treatment heavily sprayed down the barrel so the rod wouldnt bend or stick halfway(happened to my Ruger 10/22T but thats another post I'll put in the Rimfire forum looking for advice). After looking at the patch - heavily covered in a brown type of substance. My first reaction was that was rust for sure. I'll take so pics of the patches as I have kept them for advice from people in the know.

After a few passes with the G96 I went in with six passes of JB Bore Cleaner and then a bunch of dry patches to get the JB completely out. The patch of JB was very dark coloured.

Then i went in with 762 Solvent. A pass - no real colour in patch - then again in about five minutes with another patch and it was very blue. Coppering on a new barrel? I know retailers sell the CZ "as new" but is this normal? Just curious as this is only my second rifle i have ever owned.

After all that a pass with Hoppes #9 and a few dey patches until the patches came out clean.

At the range I shot some unknown to me surplus ammo. If anybody has any idea what the manufacturer is on this stuff please let me know. All cartridges come in little light green packages of twenty on ten count stripper clips.

I wanted to ask the dealer a few questions about the case of cartridges but he was to busy to even bother with giving me the time of day after I had agreed to a purchase. Not the great customer service that I heard about this place. Maybe caught him at a bad time but I didnt feel like a valued customer at the end of it all.

Bah thats neither here nor there as I had a blast so to speak with this rifle today at the range. Fifty yard destruction. Notice my little pig on the left for my ruger. ;)

As I mentioned earlier my camera died so I couldnt show how the rifle shot for me today. I'll post pics later. The rifle isnt a tack driver but a solid shooter. I could keep five shot groups withing a target page at 75 yards. I couldnt really give you guys an real indication of how accurate the 858-2 fires as it really does shoot better than I am capable of shooting it.

I am a total beginner to the shooting sport but am learning fast.

I have an 858-2 as well. I love this gun. The ammo you have is czech milsurp with the M43 bullet. It is corrosive so clean your gun immediately after firing. I have gotten really good groups with some Federal soft points. I use em for killing coyotes. but they cost alot more than the milsurp stuff.

I didn't know you guys had that much snow down there. I am in edmonton and we don't have any snow yet.

Ya we got a lot of snow here. All of it dropped on me as I was out there this morning. I had a burlap covering me all morning which had to be a site to see in all that snow. A guy with a tactical looking rifle covered in a mossy oak burlap covered in snow with a green boonie hat. :)

I payed $650 for the rifle (drove up to Edmonchuck to get it), $220 for a crate of surplus (too much?) and $75 for an Uncle Mikes tactical rifle bag.

Anybody know of a good place to buy surplus ammo in Calgary?

Thanks Polish-Jack. How do you know this anyway?
Just curious.

Thanks for all the input guys but do you have any opinions on the patchs threw the barrel?

Ya i thought it was too much at the time but it was an impulse buy with the rifle.

Hahah I couldnt resist not posting this pic of the lovely and talented Veronika Zemanova taken from Deckard's post of the 58.

He means wash it out with hot (boiling) water and then oil it. Make sure you disassemble the rifle and clean all areas where the corrosive salts might reach, including the gas system.

Very nice pics. I love my CZ. Haven't killed any fuzzie creatures yet but I've taken it out to the ol' gravel pit a few times.

Crap on the snow. I'm in Newfie and even WE don't have snow yet. Least not where I am.

Now I want one.

Just what I need, another caliber!

Glad to see you're having fun with it.

Snow? Brrr. On the off chance that we have a snow day here I'm planning on staying indoors!

I shot one today ...

My impressions were that it is quite an accurate rifle, but that the stock needs some work to make the rifle comfortable to shoot. The sights are set so low that you end up crowding the stock and getting bumped in the cheek! The added on Dlask flashhider really helped minimize muzzle flip and maintained the gun on target ... to a surprising degree. Magazine insertion is relatively easy, but the mag release area is a bit crowded. I did find that it can be gotten used to with practice, however.

I can see how guys might find this a credible Tac Rifle gun, although the lack of rails can pose issues for those of us that like (need?) optical enhancements. Iron sights just aren't as easy to find some days ...

The lack of rails means that night matches might require a little creativity on the part of the user.

Mags seemed unnecessarily large, but that's due to the 'hold open' rail on the back of each magazine ... and a 'hold open' feature is quite a desirable thing to have on a rifle used in action shooting. The lack of a mag release (other than the bolt handle) is a bit of a minus, however.

The 'AK looks' are kind of nice, mind you ... even with the 19" barrel. I'm convinced it just needs a longer handguard to make it look 'right' ... the gas assembly is in the way, though.

Availability of cheap ammo is a big plus of course.

Overall, a pretty good rifle, but a little 'customizing' might be necessary to turn it into a more versatile sporting firearm.

Does anyone have the original bipod for the VZ-58 that he can attach on the CZ-858 and take pics? I would like to see if it looks RPK-ish. Folded and unfolded pics :D

I was talking with someone from Milarm who told me that there is a bipod made for this rifle that gets attached to the bayonet lug.

Havent seen it though.
