CZ-858-2 p0rn :)

bend the tabs to get the original upper off, then make the upper to the exact same dimensions as the old one.

Hmm, thanks. A video would be nice to see how this is done.

Now we are in the dry season, I'm hoping to spend the winter making the furnature.

Now I'm stumped, which tabs?

It's three metal pieces spot welded. It looks like when they make it, they weld the back frame and underside half tubing together, slide the resin piece on, then attach the front clip spot welding that. Cant see how this could come apart.

Oh yours has no tabs it has the clip, ok so stick a screwdriver in where the pin (used to slide in to the block under the rear leaf sight) is and with alot of strenght twist the handguard with the metal retaining clip together. It shouldnt be welded in there, none of the 5 that I have owned were ever welded in.

It is just the plastic resin handguard & small retaining clip you twist off not the inside metal.

Clean a bit of the powder residue off and notice the hole in the top middle of the HG? theres a small dimple sticking thru that hole, then down the sides there are 2 metal tabs that wrap under the handguard. That is the retainer clip. I just pull the pin out and use it to hold on to while I twist the handguard off the metal. In the middle vents you can see the metal tabs clearly sticking out.

Can someone explain to me why some of the cz858 are painted in a kind of "blue-gray" color, while some others (like the one in OP's pics) are more like dark gray/black?

Here's what I mean by "blue-gray":

So far as I know there are 5 different companies that make this style of rifle and each one has a different style of finish or something esle that makes there a little different.
  • CZ
  • VZ
  • CZH
  • FSN
  • CSA
The last 2 on this list come with a completely different finish than the others. Although the time I have spent with the first 3 there are some differances in the type or shadding of the color depending on year of manufactoring.

Most are blue-gray some aren't. Some people refinish them a different colour or blue/park them.

AFAIK the CZ858 (read: not the CSAs) are all that same colour, but it shows up differently in photographs and/or different lighting conditions.
Mine is that blue-grey colour, but it doesn't really show in this photo:

The barrel is black though; I think the previous owner may have painted it.

Bought 858 and maybe hundred rounds through it. Case jams in barrel and shell extractor breaks edge of case off. Can not open receiver on top,it is jammed. Any ideas on how to open it without damaging something?

You had a case head separation and tried using a broken shell extractor to remove it?

And

Receiver is jammed? The top cover won't come off?

Does the bolt carrier move freely?

I had this happen to me several times,

all I did was with a wood/rubber mallet hit the cocking handle with it till it frees up. Once it does just take the receiver cover off and action out. If you have a wooden dowell or something similar (small enough) to fit in the bore (but not scrape the hell out of it), bang it out with a mallet.

oh and scrub/clean the chamber well cuz it seems the laquer acts like a glue sometimes.
Now I carry a little mallet and take apart rod in my range bag incase it happens again.

Second that. It's just a light. However, first CZ's i've seen on the shelves of Target Sports were light colours. They didn't look too appealing to me at that time. This rifle is from a latest batch from Wolverine. I am planning to Armacoat this baby soon anyways:) Should look good with wood :)
