CZ-858-2 vs. VZ-58L

A question for the VZ-58/CZ-858 owners: how significant is the non-chrome barrel on the CZ-858-2? Enough to make the VZ-58L worthwhile? I'd prefer to avoid the hassle of the restricted VZ-58S - just wondering if the 858-2 is going to be worth it.

Can we even buy the VZ-58L anywhere?

Apologies if this has been addressed somewhere - I tried sifting through some of the monster threads and gave up.

58L - gas port /system is not Chromed and still needs vigorus cleaning...
858 - nothing is Chromed - mine works great.. i shoot corrosive and always clean the hell out of it.

58L - Marstar - corrently out of stock - more on the way
858 - Wolverine - dont know stock situation

IF YOU SHOOT CORROSIVE = NO MATTER THE GUN CLEAN THE HELL OUT OF IT.......

I think hfp75 is bang on. Neither have a chromed gas /port system, so both will require cleaning after shooting corrosive, so how much more work is it to clean the barrel while you are already doing the rest? Not a lot.

I have the CZ-858 and I love it, works well and shoot surplus great. If the restricted part is your main issue, then go with the CZ-858, you won't be disapointed.

Wolverine stocks the CZ-858, that's where I got mine, don't know stock though, but if they are out, Frontier Arms, another site sponsor, has them. I've dealt with Frontier quite a bit and they have great service and prices.

Thanks for the info, gents. I'm certainly not averse to regular cleaning, and I don't intend to subject the rifle to overly harsh environmental conditions. My concern is more one of barrel longevity with high-volume shooting than rust resistance. There seems to be a bit of controversy regarding how much of a difference chrome barrels make - just looking to get some informed opinions. Thx.

I've got a CZ858 and when a friend of mine who's a much better shooter than I am tested it out from a rest, he was very impressed with it's accuracy, which is alot better than most AKs. He owns one as well and has not had any problems firing corrosive, though he always gives the bore of his an initial cleaning at the range and finishes up more thoroughly once he gets home.

As to the issue of chrome vs nomal barrels, the opinion of my shooting partner was that the the latter might wear out faster if subjected to rapid fire (ie. emptying all five rounds in quick succession on a regular basis). For those of us who are normally more conservative in their expenditure of ammo however, the non-chrome barrels seem to offer the edge when it comes to accuracy, and should not wear out quickly from regular usage.

I wish that I could be a bit more authoritative with my advice, but think it safe to say that the non-restricted status of the 858 does give it the edge over the VZ58L.

from marstar, unless there is another that has a longer barrel??

Each carbine incorporates new and arsenal refinished milspec components and is individually inspected, test-fired, and certified by the Czech Proof House prior to our importing them. As this rifle is not a Kalashnikov (AK-47) variant it is not prohibited. The VZ-58 (VZ-58S) features the original military length 390mm chrome-lined barrel (restricted, meaning anyone licensed to own handguns may purchase one). The following accessories are included:
 
marstar has vz58s which our restricted but they had VZ58L which have 19" chrome barrels "non restricted"

marstar and wolverine currently has the VZ58 short barrel .

marstar will be getting a shipment of 4 different models in the fall , short , long , krinkov and new stock.

sorry , cant elaborate any more then that . 100 of krinkov style (extra short) are coming in the fall , along with vz58S(hort) , vz58L(ong) and vz(new furniture ) .... very exciting , cant wait to see what the two new models looks like .

Last week I tried ordering a CZ-858-2 non restricted from Wolverine but they were out of stock. They said they have more coming in late July.

I tried Frontier Firearms, they had a few CZ-858-2 non restricted but it sounded like they were going fast.
 
Like others said, corrosive ammo is harmless if you clean your gun out. I love the 858 and have only shot corrosive out of it. Inside still looks like new - just clean it properly - which doesn't take all that long to do.
 
OMG, another "chrome barrel" thread. It means nothing! Just clean it! If you have a chrome barrel and use corrosive you still have to work a little harder to clean the gas system. A non-chrome barrel just means an little extra swabbing in the barrel which is so easy a liberal could do it.

VZ or CZ really should just depend on wither or not you want a shorter, more authentic (to the vz-58), barrel or one you can shoot deer with.
