Well I wanted to put the corrosive ammo thing to rest I don’t ever clean my cz-858 on purpose I wanted to see if it would pit I cleaned it one time when I got it and just today after 3000 plus rounds I am not saying to do this to your rifle I just wanted to test this out I have had this rifle for 4 years now and love it

And what I seen was Zero pitting If you need to see any other area let me know I will snap a pic

I used the surplus ammo in the green box

Dirty pics...

Half-ass clean because I dont care if it pits

One thing I may add though is its usually quite dry in edmonton humidity wise, that may have helped play a roll as its not sucking up moisture and allowing the salts to work.

This is still deffinatly food for thought though, thanks for posting. However I love my guns and will always clean them, only time they would have to tough it out is if I had no choice.

How did you clean the recess on the piston rod? I put solvent, scrub scrub, solvent, scrub scrub with a brass brush and it still won't come out clean like yours. :(

Yours hasn't corroded yet. My buddy did this sort of thing with an SKS. Shot many crates through it, and didn't clean it. Just add grease and go. Worked well for a good number of years in dry Calgary. Then, over one winter, it rusted.

He had to buy a new piston, springset, and trigger parts and wirebrush a bunch of stuff.

i did same thing with mine when i did not know that i was suing corrosive ammo well it was cheap to buy at milarm but wasnt mentioned that this was
very corrosive..... well i shot like 1000s round ammo thru my both 858 and
sks and guess what i had 0 rust.... i live in edmonton as well and its very
dry

interesting, ever take it out in the rain?

I took mine out a few weeks ago in the woods, shot about 200-300 rounds, put it away for 2 weeks without cleaning.

Took it to the range the other day. First round, failure to extract. Had to take it home and pound out the casing with a steel rod and a hammer. When i got it out I looked in the chamber and saw rust. No rust in the barrel... wtf.

Not sure what to make of it. Guess i should have cleaned it. Should have looked in it before shooting it at the range... dumbass mistake on my part. I was kinda used to the gun just working flawlessly.

Is your barrel chrome lined?, because as far as I know the barrels are lined but the chambers are not so that would be why.

Pretty sure it's not, I thought 858's were not lined.

since you took it out into the woods then its must be a CZ858-2 non-rest , it is non-chrome line.

the CZ858-4 restricted and both the VZ58L and the VZ58S are chromed line.

Here's one for ya..

I think I went around 8000rnds before cleaning it. Not only was it not cleaned, I sandblasted the finish off the entire rifle first. Just a light coat of gunzilla before the test and away she went. No rust, no failures.

(the wet in the receiver is actually water, this was after a shoot in the rain)

Nope none and zero pits :)
