Need help... Thanks guys.

Check your local hunting regulations.

I know that it is legal here in Alberta and I was thinking of using it for whitetail this year. Not because it is a more effective choice than any other rifle, but to physically demonstrate it's "sporting purpose".

TSE has 7.62x39 softpoint ammo. Call them up.

Just as a final note: I wouldn't try plugging a moose or bear with one if I were you. The 7.62x39 is ballistically similar to the .30-30, but with a 28gr lighter bullet. It's effectiveness on animals that size is highly questionable, especially if you haven't had a lot experience hunting.

I was about to write how 7.62 x 39 is illegal for big game in Alberta due to a case length regulation, but I checked the regs again and can't find the prohibition! Good news for SKS and 858 owners indeed!

From the regs:

===
It is unlawful to

set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:
ammunition of less than .23 calibre,
ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets,
an auto-loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine,
this line used to deal with fired case length of less than (whatever size) but has been removed!
a shotgun having a gauge of .410 or less,
a shotgun in a bird sanctuary,
bait, except as permitted for the hunting of black bears (click here to view Big Game Regulations and Black Bear Baiting),
an arrow other than an authorized arrow (click here to view Big Game Regulations and Bowhunting),
a bow other than an authorized bow (click here to view Big Game Regulations and Bowhunting),
a muzzle-loading firearm of less than .44 calibre,
a rifle or shotgun in WMUs 212, 248 or 410 (persons hunting under the authority of a Strathcona White-tailed Deer Licence, a Foothills Deer Licence, or an Antlerless Moose Special Licence in Strathcona County may hunt with a bow and arrow, cross-bow, muzzleloader or shotgun),
a trap,
a cross-bow and arrow that is not authorized (click here to view Hunting with a Cross-bow)
===

Of course it's possible - the x39 isn't a bad round by any means... I'm just happy that the reg-writers have had the sense to apparently strike that regulation!

Doc M, the casing length minimum was removed 3-4 years ago. I had contacted F&W about 7.62x39, and they told me that they had received alot of requests about 7.62x39 and about 44 mag .......

It was also no doubt spurred by the short magnums that have been coming out.

Thanks for confirming this - I never owned a '39 so I never worried about it, but I'm happy to know that someone came to their senses!

Good job to all who lodged inquiries or complaints! No reason to prohibit a perfectly serviceable set of cartridges just based on case length...

Good news, Bros and Sis's!

That is good news. The CZ-858 manual says in the intro, that quote: "The semi-automatic CZ 858 TACTICAL rifle in cal. 7,62x39 mm is a self-loading small arm designed for sport and hunting purposes."

Then later on in the sight adjustment section it states: "Besides this the left sight of the rear sight leaf is marked by letter "U" (universal), for shooting at moving targets and night combat at ranges up to 300 metres." :D

It is pretty damn accurate for what it is. I was surprised. I really am looking forward to cruising around in the bush with my "evil looking AK47 machine gun"

In MB, a centrefire rifle of .23 calibre or less is not RECOMMENDED, as opposed to flat-out PROHIBITED. (for big game)

7.62X39 = .30

Several years ago I got stupid (living in the city) and got rid of all my rifles except for a lone Chi-com AK in 7.62x39. Then I moved back to the country and got the hunting and shooting bug back. Only problem, not enough funds to buy a proper hunting rifle. So a quick trip to Wholesale, back when the service was good, resulted in two very expensive boxes of Norma 130 gr? soft points. That AK would group 5 shots inside 3 inches at 100 meters, so off I went. The afternoon of the second day out a nice little three year old Whitetail wondered out 30 yds in front of me. One high heart shot and he rolled right there. The bullet slipped between the ribs and demolished the heart and absolutley shredded the lungs. A ragged chunk of lead and copper was just up against the offside hide. A mule deer succumb to the same fate two days later at a range or 25 yds. I new enough not to tempt fate and retired it as a hunting rifle the next year. I ended trading it straight accross for a very nice Weatherby Vangaurd in '06. One of the oldder models with the high gloss Monte Carlo comb stocks.

I do beleive as loaded the 7.62x39 uses a bullet .310 - .312, not the more conventional .308.

Please tell me you're a native....

Alright, I'm calmed down. Now, if you notice since Mar 2004 I have a total of 114 posts. Not very many. Most of my time is spent working, shooting, reloading or hunting. Up unitl last year I spent at least 60 days a year hunting and have taken game in many locations throughout North America. I've taken 5 course at Gunsite and other training facilities in Canada and the US. Since I was self taught I've ran into almost all of the common mistakes in the gun trade. I say this not to brag but to say that I may be a very mild authority on some matters, an educated beginner really, to be humble. So to have a dumb a** comment about being a native really pisses me off, when all I was doing was relaying an event that I was part off. No wonder I hardly post.
