I finally got around to modifying my UTG barrel mount.

The UTG mount was bought from Marstar (actually I had to buy two for an extra bracket); why no one makes a mount specifically for this purpose I'll never know.

Anyway, I'm happy... I finally got my irons visible through my RDS :)

EnjoY!

As I said I bought two... I removed the main portion of the mount completely (I didn't like how bulky it was) and had to take the second top bracket from the second kit (these are what clamp the barrel).
I then went to my local hardware store and bought some longer screws (x4) and nuts (x16) to act as spacers as well as to clamp the barrel; two in the middle (I needed a 6mm lift in order to get a good co-witness with the FastFire) and two nuts on the bottom for extra strength.

*Note: One can make the mount with just one kit (instead of small bracket on bottom you use the large double rail bracket).

Ok... I clearly have too much time this morning:

Red line is rough approx. of barrel centerline when installed.
Blue line is rough rail height compared.

A - Looks like perfect height (for FastFire). However, the inner diameter may be too large. The yellow dots on image C represent the contact points on the barrel.
B - Too high, can't see irons (just barely!)
C - Perfect height!
D - Too low.

It says that it has barrel adapters, "Complete with Barrel Adaptors and Stabilizing Design to Guarantee Rock Solid Attachment". So I figure it would adapt to different barrel diameters. I am seriously thinking about trying it.
I'll let you know if I do it and how it turns out.

I checked. 'A' will fit, but requires the front sight to be removed. It is one piece and the front sight tower is too tall. However, it would allow for a close fit and easy removal of the top guard for cleaning.

Nice, thanks Deckard.

Now to figure out how hard it is to remove the front sight :D... looks like I will be doing a Barrel Mount Version 2.0 in the near future ;)

~Cheers

I'm always leery of anything clamped to a barrel. I hope it works out for you though, nice to retain the irons and use your red dot.

That might be high enough for 'that' RDS, however... I don't think the 'fabsports' rail is long enough to accommodate it. To put things into perspective the FastFire is 2" in length... the tube RDS above is double that.

In other news:

Yeah, I am committing myself to the other rail now - front sight has been removed. :)

*** What would be really really hot is if someone made a new picatinny GAS block for the CZ/VZ rifles to accommodate an AR type sighting system or small RDS. ***

I've been working on a design for one of these for a short while but its one of a bunch of vz58 items that are in the que. The design would partially attach to the gas block so levelling is no problem. You'll know we're close when you see the 'would you buy..." in the forums. Right now I'm just booking for a Conservative majority.

I think replacing the gas block would be a good idea but the level of skill required pretty much rules it out as a viable product and in all honesty there is no real benefit
