cz 858 copper in grooves

Why do the cz 858 have so much copper build up in the barrel after only a few dozen rounds? Are these new barrels from the factory or rebuilt barrels?

My chinese sks has 500 rounds through it and is spotless compared to my 2 CZ's 858 that I Have.

Hate to say it but a chinese sks shoots better groups than both my 858's.

Let's not even talk about the trigger problems and gremlin that the 858's have.


Why so much copper build up ????
 
Well the 858 is not chrome lined vs Chinese SKS which is. That's why its easier to see the copper buildup. I'm not sure if copper build up on chrome is less or you simply cannot see it as well because of the reflection.
 
Chrome lined bbl's do have less inherent friction and chrome is less porous. Copper will take longer to build up in a nice chrome bore typically.

That being said, both will collect chrome.

The chromed bore will hast longer and be easier to clean.

wrt VZ58 type rifles - many here have been waiting for 2+ years for Marstar to get in more VZ58L's so we can have non-restricted VZ's with chromed bores.
 
Good to know. I will take my 858 to the range for the first time today.

Guess I'll get some Hoppes Copper solvent just in case!
 
First, regular use of a good copper solvent such as Sweet's, Butch's Bore Shine or Accubore will rid your 858 barrel of copper.
If you wish, you could try to polish that bore, too. Get some J&B or Iosso compound and spend a few hours on it. Once your barrel has been polished it won't foul up as fast.
Now, for the accuracy problem, I can say that a good 858 an be as accurate as a good SKS provided you can do your part.
One thing that doesn't help the 858 at the bench is the ridiculous height one has to be to avoid hitting the table with the long magazine, hence destroying a good triangulated stance and stability. A shorty mag does wonders for that.

I think I will try to polish the bore. Ive used hoppes copper cleaner and it did o.k, but left quite a bit of copper on the lands and that was the overnight treatment. I'll look into other products.

I'll agree that the long magazine does destroy a good hold on the cz while on the bench. I'll try a five rounder and see if I can get it to shoot as good as my Chinese sks's.

One caveat: when using Butch Bore Shine or Accubore, WEAR GLOVES! lest you want to suffer and lose all your nail cuticles!
Once your barrel is rid of copper, get the paste out and prepare a good tight fitting brush: wind a patch around the bristles and smear it with compound then go at it, 10 to 30 strokes before changing patch and doing it again a few more times. You can't overpolish anyway.
Use Iosso or J&B paste, they are NON-IMBEDDING, I don't know about Autosol or Dursol as far as barrel polishing is concerned. Should do the trick but...
Dursol is a very fine paste abrasive (I used to prepare my Campagnolo track hubs with Dursol: replace the grease with it, do a 100 km run, flush the hubs, throw away the balls and replace them with new ones, put a drop of oil on them and tune the hub to leave just a bit of "trackman's slack").

Yup, I've been waiting & waiting to purchase a Vz 58L, now eyeing a Cz 858... BUT... With the recent siezure of Marstar's Vz shipment & johnone's comment, pasted below... I can see the writing on the wall for these types of firearms in Canada now that the RCMP has handed out notice of Revokation of Registration Certificates for the Type 97 rifles from Lever Arms & the much longer held High Standard 10B semi auto shotguns... (Just ranting guys, carry on...)

Don't tell me the RCMP is thinking about revoking cz 858 registration certificates ? Wouldn't there be a grandfathers clause if this were the case?

I personally think they are thinking about A LOT MORE than the T97, 10B and 858's... And NO, there will be NO grandfathering, their hasn't been in the T97 or 10B... Head over to the Action Centre, LOOK at the NFA forum...

The T97 is an attempt to set precedent on a small scale to be used on the larger scale. It has far reaching implications that effect all semi auto rifles from the Remington 750 to the SKS, 858 etc. Its a very big deal and all firearms owners need to get involved.

Sounds like incrementally taking away firearms from owners . Semi auto's seem to be "their" next objective. Then it will be pump shot guns etc.

I will be writing my MP. I hope other will follow, otherwise we will end up like Australia and maybe even that Hell hole they call the U.K
