So, I took my new CZ 858 (folding) to the range today. Despite the rain and fog, it was ~+9 (warm for Ottawa) and was a great day to be outside.

The gun is new. I gave it a good clean yesterday with G96 all thourhgout to get rid of the factory residue (there was quite a bit - so much so that my wife was wondering what that foul smell was...) I was using some Romanian surplus 7.62X39 copper fmj. All of this was done at 50 yds as there was too much fog to shoot 100 yds.

I started shooting off the bench supported with both hands, std 2 hand grip sort of thing. This was ok, but soon after got our my barrel rest and used it for most of the time. The iron sights were actually pretty good in terms of alignment. When I got it lined up and shot what I think was "correctly" it seemed to be pretty close (well, to some extent I was just hapy hitting the target...).

It functioned perfectly, no issues with misfires (aka gremlin) - fyi I do not have a tab.

Couple of things I learned:
1) the cases get sent flying quite a ways and more often than not, straight up. This was a bit of a pia as they kept hitting the roof and bouncing back down either on me, near me or near the poor guy next to me. Need to get a deflector for this thing for sure.

2) my right eye is definitely not as good as my left. I don't notice it as much with guns with scopes and diopter adj, but with iron sights, crap I really wasn't seeing much of the target. Time for either a scope (most likely) or maybe a pair of glasses. Good thing I'm going to the eye doc next week.

3) The folding stock is too short. I have long arms and found I was getting a little nose rub from the back end of the stock. I have a fab def buffer and stock on the way, hope it will give me a little more length to stop the annoying tap on my nose.

4) 5 round mags are really annoying. I'm def going to get the B&T magwell adapter and some lar mags to be able to use 10 rounds.

5) The pistol grip IS too small. Going to have to get a larger, prolly FD one.

Once I got home, I gave it a really good cleaning with g96 nitro and then reg g96. It was not really that dirty for having gone thru 200 rounds of corrosive. Not sure if the g96 fromyesterday helped make some of the nasty crap a little easier to clean or not, but it seemed to.

Question for anyone with a CZ 858:
What scope mounts are you using for a decent scope (magnifier, not red not)? I was looking at the one Zahal have that replaces the rear cover - anyone have that and have any feedback?

Here's my 2 targets from today:
first one was brand new, 50 yds, both hands initially, then barrel rest:

2nd one, mostly barrel rest, also 50 yds, about 20 rounds standing, not other support:

Overall, lots of fun today.

Your list is dead on! Especially #2. Got the mag adapter, FD grip and fixed stock(the folding stock looks cool, but a POS) Don't know a of a good scope mount, but want one.

About dust cover scope mount zahal sales. Few days ago I bought few 5/15 and 5/20 mags from corwin arms the guy their said that he will be a supporting dealer here and they will sale the same mount for around $240. I too , can hardly wait .

All hail , the FAB pistol grip , it rocks !

I hate to rain on your parade but there's a few things you should know. First off, the stock is not too short. Its designed for soldiers who don't shoot from a bench and who wear gear. It is more than long enough if you adopt the modern squares stance for offhand shooting. Second, the rifle is far from ideal for mounting any sort of magnified optics and the cartridge(and ammo as its mostly surplus) is far from suited to the role as well. Three, stop resting the rifle on the barrel if you expect any sort of accuracy. By doing so you're affecting harmonics and thus losing out on any sort of consistency/accuracy within the rifle.

Hi,
Our web site will be active in 1-3 weeks. You will be able to find me on Gun Nutz's dealer Network. Once I go active i will make announcement here

Thank You Corwin-arms

I had my 858 out for the first time recently as well with the FAB forend, grip, and fixed sliding buffered stock. Mine, too, ejects almost vertically and slightly forward, so I guess I don't have to ask whether that's normal :) I used the boiling water cleaning technique (that Romanian stuff is FILTHY) but this post has reminded me I neded to check it out now that it's been a few days and check for corrosion.

I must be weird in that I actually didn't mind the size and shape of the original pistol grip. I don't have small hands, but pretty slender fingers. The FAB grip definitely provides a more positive er...grip....but the standard one actually fit my hand a little more comfortably. The gun did not feel like it was recoiling heavily, but the cheek slap was obscene. I suspect that's my form/fault. Not a great shot, but at 25 and 50 meters I was actually pleasentlysurprised by my group size (shooting supported). It's the first rifle larger than .22LR that I've owned.

Can someone elighten me regarding the magwell adapter and LAR mags? Those can be used with a 7.62x39 rifle?

You are probably shooting it in the shotgun stance, try squaring your shoulders to the target and see if that helps with the short LOP. I have long arms as well and have found that squaring up to the target makes most of the LOP problems with black/red rifles go away.

4) 5 round mags are really annoying.

I agree. I never noticed as much with my AR because the LAR mags cushion the stupidity of our laws a bit. But my vz58 carbine makes me weep every time I take it out. It just cries out for the full 30 rounds in the mag.

Thanks Mark. I am pretty square, was shooting it from a bench. Maybe I just have a long nose ;)

It's a bit of a moot point as my new buffer/stock arrived yesterday and once I get them on I'm pretty sure it will be a longer lop.

I was thinking I was going to have a biotch of a time getting the stock screw out (given all of the comments from other owners), so I gave it a shot with a cordless impact driver and a big flat bit - it came right out, no problem. Gotta love power tools ;) Course I put it back on cuz I'm sure that taking it off and leaving it that way in the safe breaks at least 7 laws, maybe more Laugh2Laugh2Laugh2

I thought the folding stock was too short too. I'm 6'2. My nose was literally touching back of receiver. I put on an adapter and adjustable stock and buffer tube. After reading on here about squaring my stance. I went back to folding stock. Added a piece of pipe insulation for comfort and now I prefer this setup over the stock and buffer tube. Oh yeah squaring my stance helped with my shooting on this rifle. Increased accuracy!!

So, here is a pic of it as it sits now with a couple of upgrades.

Fab tube with the recoil reducing piston
New Stock
B&T magwell adapter (installed by Jason at Gunco here in Ottawa - Big thanks Jason!)

Hopefully the reported -12 for tomorrow will not happen and I can get out to try out the new LAR nags in it. I ran all of them thru and they fed and ejected very nicely. One nice thing Jason did was he was able to keep the bolt catch to woak as a manual catch. It doesn't stay open on the last round, but it's nice to have the manual catch to keep it open if I want to.

I ran 180 rounds thru it today with the LAR mags and it worked flawlessly. Since it wasn't f-ing foggy today I could actually see the targets and at 50 yds the iron sights were pretty good.
