I seen these 858"s on the computer and really liked what I saw. Boy does this gun have the COOOL facter. I like military style guns. Had an FN, m-14, sks-d, 303 british carbine, russian sks.etc, so this looks like another i would add to the collection.....till I actually handled one in person. I gotta tell ya..I'm a bit disapointed. The wood? on this is horrible.It looks like partical board. The greyish finish was ugly.The gun is short like its built for the youth sector. The gun "rattles when you shake it...Whats that all about ? I am not bashing this gun...how ever I am stating the observable evidence. I realize that their are different variations of this gun , but the one I handled didnt do a thing for me. Sorry if I offended anyone who ownes one, this is not my intention.This is MY thoughts after seeing it.
 
Try shooting it. It will change all of your opinions... except for the beaver barf wood, but there are plenty of affordable aftermarket stock sets on the market.
 
The one that lives here is crazy accurate. We're working on replacing the stocks with home made ones out of birch that are more man sized.

Shoot one before you make up your mind.

Shooting it......hmmm. Tell me more. I thought it would be the same as an sks...recoil etc..NO ?

I find it to be far more controlable in terms of muzzle rise for followup shots, as well as having the ability to do fast magazine changes.

Besides those issues, having the ability to install stuff like a quick bolt release and extended magazine release, and you can run that gun seriously fast.

Plus, it looks like an AK... what more do you need to know? :D

Thanks Kevin..I will hold onto my money then ,.. till I get a chance to actually fire one.
 
After aquiring my 858 my sks lives in the safe. I find the recoil less on the 858 as well as muzzle rise. I have a fabsports forend and grip on it and am adding an ace skeleton stock to it tomorrow. I take the cz 858 over the sks every day of the week. It is also way more accurate.
 
There's a Canadian company that sells mods, I think its NEIT arms, anyway yeah the base stock is crap, but its as cheap as dirt and the action seems to be quality, I know quite a few people who have them and they have burned through crates without any problems. I find it really accurate for its price. The extended release for the mag can accidently be pulled on clothes, some people don't like that, but its the same for all types.

Plus the fact that for all intensive purposes its a AK makes me laugh at the governments feeble attempts to make window dressing illegal.
 
Point is that they have very similar ergonomics, both are piston guns, have very similar profiles, and fire the same caliber.

So they made some much needed improvements, changed the specs on parts, and changed it from hammer fired to striker fired.

Looks like an AK, smells like an AK... :nest:

You're complaining about finish and wood on a actively used military rifle. It's about lasting long and functioning, not looking pretty for the youths.
The wood on it is strong.
