* If the vehicle does not have a trunk or lockable compartment, put firearms and firearm containers out of sight inside the vehicle and lock the vehicle.

* If you are in a remote wilderness area and cannot lock your non-restricted firearms inside your vehicle, unload them and put them out of sight. Attach a secure locking device unless they are needed for predator control.

i carried a savage 99 in my trunk in the 70's- and i take CARE of my guns- the 72 dodge i had had a perfect place to carry it in the trunk formed by the design in the trunk area that you could stick a gun boot in - just like the scabbard on a saddle rig- after about 4 months i pulled it out of there, and there was rust on everything- not bad enough to pit, but a nice color of ORANGE- i think it was climate as well as the trunk being a CLOSED area with no air circulation that did this- the reason the back of the truck up in the window works is that every time you open the doors the air cirulates;the trunk can go for months at a time without being opened- and as far as humidity,i'm in alberta- i'd hate to see what a HUMID climate woukd do

BCBoy, I heard from my father that apparently in BC a man got caught with a registered .50cal in his trunk. They confiscated the gun and gave him backhis ammo, and from what my father heard (he caught the news at the last minute) they are trying to charge him but the firearm IS non-restricted. So what i think is that, if your rifle looks mean,(or just plain cool) they will be the *big brother* and do what they can.. :(
correct me if I am wrong, i have googled it but have failed to find any info on that particular arrest.
Cheers,
Paul

This is true but the fact that the guy involved had high capacity mags for his m14 was the reason that his stuff got taken. I don't think he's being charged.

I've had my sks in my trunk most of the time for about 15 years now. If it's stolen I guarantee that the cops will make a big deal out of it but at the end of the day, it's legal.

I've kept an M-14 in a case in the lock box on the back of my pick up for about 5 years. Take it out every so often and take a look at it, just gives me a reason to go to the range on my way to or from work!

I always have my Win 1300 Defender behind the seat of my truck and a selection of shells is in the drivers door compartment. 24/7 - 365 days a year. I try to remember to regularily take it out and oil it. Temp swings can be huge here, I've seen it go from -10 to +10 in the same day. While it may not be "good" for the shotgun, it hasn't caused any real grief other than some pitting on the outside of the barrel from not being oiled frequently enough. Big deal, it's a truck gun and so I really don't care about the "cosmetics" of the thing. I wouldn't treat a vauluable firearm like that though .. it would get much better treatment. As for the LEO's and what they think .. I'll cross that bridge if and when I need to. It's perfectly legal, so I would say after supplying the reg. cert. and your PAL, the onus is back on the LEO to justify any further questions. You don't "need" a reason to be doing something that is legal. If pushed .. I suppose I could pull the old "I have a valid hunting license and crows are always open being on the schedule C list (things that are open all year long) reason.

Why would the police be looking in your trunk in the first place? they either need your permission, a warrant or reasonable suspicion that you are doing something illegal to look in your trunk. Let me quote a friend who is a long time cop, "Regardless of how nice the police officer might seem, and the fact that you are doing nothing wrong, you never ever let an officer search your home of vehicle without a court order". There are to many activist, sociology degree'd, social engineering douche bags in uniform these days.

And never volunteer information to the officer that you have a gun in your car unless they are legally about to search it.

:agree:

I have no issues with carrying a non-restricted trunk/truck gun 24/7. While there is certainly support to allow a non-restricted firearm to be left in the vehicle as per the CFC website, one still needs to consider the following.

Your vehicle is parked in your drive way, with your trunk gun left inside. The vehicle is broken into overnight and said trunk gun is stolen. Inside your house you have a nice safe where the rest of your firearms are stored. Where do you suppose that could go? Is the trunk storage reasonable under the circumstances?

I think if you ended up having it stolen, I could see some folks pointing at unsafe storage for starters...the question would be asked about whether it would be reasonable to leave the firearm in the vehicle when you could have carried the firearm inside and locked it up with the rest.

Just a thought.;)

Exactly.

If the gun is left in your car, in front of your house, it is clearly not "in transport".

"In transport" means you are going somewhere with it. And yes, people have been charged with unsafe storage for leaving a rifle in their car.

i keep a gun im my truck 24/7 for the fact that in this area there is a massive vermin population almost all daylight hours you cand find predator mostly yotes skualking around. thats a good enough reason to keep it back there, and according to the gov its alright to keep a gun in your truck for that kind of preadtor control. and rightfully so too. but this is only really understandable in farm/ranch country where permission or owned land is traveled.

If you dont use your rights you will loose your rights. There is no problem if it is a NR. It would depend also on security issues where you live. If you live in a high crime area, keeeping it in you trunk 24/7 would not be a good idea.

okay this question helps me out alot, and this info is proving to be very useful.
i have 2 place of resdences, one is a rural area house where i keep all of my guns. second is a high rise apartment building in a urban area that i stay in while im working. the issue is i know a few people at work, and a few gun clubs around and i would like to be able to bring a couple guns up. problem is i dont want to be walking in and out of a busy apartment building all the time with "guns in hand", case or not people still know what you have. i would prefer to leave it in the trunk of my car, i have had my car broken into once in this location for 3 years and my belief is because my doors were infact unlocked, making it easy prey for the walker by. i would feel safe knowing they were in the trunk of my car locked, but on the other hand i would feel horrible if it was stolen and my cz858 got into the wrong persons hands. i was wondering about restricted firearms though, if there is a gun club almost exactly inbetween my two residences and i want to stop to shoot a few rounds when im going from one to the other or back. can i store them and transport them between the two no problem? and no i wouldnt leave it locked in my trunk.

Our rights are pretty loose as is.:D

Hi there officer (daytime), I am on my way to the gun range /crown land to go shooting

or

Hi there Officer (night time) I am on my way back from gun range /crown land from shooting

oh ya I almost forgot here is the pamflet from the CFC/RCMP regaurding transportation of a non restricted firearm

I might be wrong , But I dont think there is any law restricting a licenced owner from having a non restricted firearm in there vehicle at any time , I dont beleive there is a law stating you need a reason why you have it as well
like I said I could be wrong

Any one have a link to that pamphlet?

I dont think you can exactly carry a non restricted firearm in your trunk all year long.. dont you need a purpose for it? I mean if its hunting season and you have your license thats fine, but... lets say in middle of march, hunting season is over.. wouldn the cops ask a few questions and do what they possibly can to confiscate your..

:D

Never thought I'd see that post from you..... I frequently carry a truck gun just incase. Could be a nuisance bear, could be a wounded deer hit by a car...... BTW Ontario MNR told me they'd charge me for having a truck gun because I'm "hunting"... LOL
