So (a) I have read the stickies and searched and (b) am still hankering after a 858 but what isn't clear to me is some sense of the odds of getting a Gremlin and if I am one of the unlucky ones how big of a deal is this ( in other words, does it have to be fixed or is it something you can just live with ) ?

To give responders a sense of my proposed usage ( in case that appears to be a factor ) I'll say that a 858 will join the SKS and the AR for end of range session plinking after precision bolt practice and that an 858 would see no more than 250 rounds a month.

I have put half a case of ammo down my 858 and have had the sear fail to engage once. Not that big of a deal to me. So I haven't bothered to fix it. Now if it was happening once every 50 rounds or so, then I would be getting it fixed.

It's fairly common.
I think there's a couple of distinct manifestations, but both are so easy to fix that nobody really minds.

The Gremlin is always there. It's a mechanical thing which could be fixed with a different bolt (which we can't get in Canada for reasons unknown to me).

Don't worry about it.

~Cheers

I have had two 858-2s with no gremlin appearing. A couple k down the pipe in each.

Is this something that is there or isn't there from the beginning, or does it develop over time?

Why people don't send the firearm back for a refund or replacement is beyond me.
Spend $700.00 on a microwave that stops heating your morning coffee would result in a return with no questions ask.
Do the same with a CZ and everyone deems that acceptable.

Why?

The problem appears do to the removal of the full auto components. The only perfect solution that will guarantee 100% fix is to tab the bolt carrier. There are people on this site that will do it for a fee.

Other than that, it is a solid gun.

I've had two and it's never surfaced.

You are not comparing apples to oranges.

I don't need to hide money from the wife, surf for hours for pictures, troll and drool on online boards, or sell off other s**t to buy a microwave. :D

I understand what you are saying, but once it's in your hands, parting with any gun from 2 to 6 weeks to get it fixed/replaced is just too much LOL!

One thing you can try is to increase the tension on the trigger group caused by the leaf spring in the receiver. Simple pull up on the spring until it sits about 1/4" higher. That seems to fix it for a lot of folks.
