I am used to cleaning my pistol mags about every 4th time firing at the range. Not exactly that they need it but just a habit that I have. I just took apart one of my CZ-858 thirty round mags pinned at 5. Simple enough push a small screwdriver into the center of the bottom of the mag and slide of the base plate. And then it got interesting. The pin holds the follower from coming out, which is expected, but the spring seems to be stuck to the follower. Do you guys add a little force and pull the spring off? If you do is it a pain in the butt to put it back together?

With the pistol mags I typically put the follower and the spring together first and than insert them into the mag. This method will not work with that pin in there. I am beginning to think that just a quick wipe of the top internal of the mags is all these will get until they fail.

Cleaning magazines is normal maintenance on any firearm, doubly so if it's semi-auto. Try going through BMQ/SQ without cleaning your magazines...

As for the OP, I wish I could help but I've yet to disassemble a CZ 858 magazine, or any pinned magazine for that matter. I'm not sure removing the spring from the follower is a good idea, I never did it with my C7 and I'd imagine it would be a HUGE pain in the ass to get back in. Depressing the follower completely and wiping it down is probably your best bet. I never really had to do more than that unless I was firing blanks (HOORAY CARBON EVERYWHERE!).

This is a guess, so I am prepared to be wrong.

But I have this vague feeling that Big Red has some small amount - like pretty small, but definitely real - familiarity with BMQ and SQ.

I don't know if he's ever been through it himself but I am almost certain he has talked to guys who have been through it...maybe about magazine maintainance, even.

What are you doing with your weapon at the range that you feel the need to clean your mags? OCD....

I think what Big Red is asking is just how hard are you running your gear that cleaning the mags after only three range visits is necessary. I agree that cleaning your mags is necessary but not at such a frequent interval. A wipe with a rag or cloth and a hit with the compressor are usually enough to do the job. Remember, magazines are disposable.

I have found with my .22 cal MKIII ruger that under normal firing I will start to get failures to feed after a short while due to dirty mags. Yes, possibly my own fault, I am using the cheapest ammo possible to feed through this gun. With my P226 Sig once in a while I will drop a mag in the sand or maybe accidently it ends up in water (not watching where I set the mag down on the bench after it has rained). I assume the CZ will end up with a magazine in the dirt one day and was thinking it would be a whole lot easier to clean it if one could take it apart.

So if you take a CZ mag apart the pin won't interfere when you reassemble it?
I disassembled an AK mag once and it was a nightmare because I could not properly put the spring back in since the pin kept blocking it.

Since the CZ mags are pinned at the back on the bolt-stop rail you can remove and reinstall the spring easily. The follower, though, isn't coming out for all the money in the world.

:D :D

I feel a video coming on!!

Please note the above is meant in all good fun and without offense!!

After a closer inspection inside the magazine I can see that the spring is wrapped around a couple of tabs on the follower so removing the spring and reinstalling it in the same place would be very difficult without removing the pin.

Aren't 858 mags incredibly easy to unpin? There was a guy at the range with a brand new PAL and CZ858 that had all 4 of his mags unpinned, said it took him an hour. He was asked to leave but it left me worrying that someone might get caught and we'd have an 858 being shown on CBC.

I have no intention of removing the pins and I hope no one else does because otherwise kiss another part of our freedoms good-bye. My statement was just to let others know that if you remove the spring you could be in for one hell of a reinstall if you care about putting it back in the same place on the follower.

I was thinking about cleaning my CZ 858 mags.
Am I a super commando? or a mall ninja?
No.
But I shoot corrosive ammo exclusively in my CZ 858. Does that not warrant concern in regards to proper cleaning of the mags as well?

uh, no... nothing about removing the pins here. It's just that they get in the way of proper magazine care. But then again, would not a fully loaded magazine be considered care? :)

I wouldn't think so, the fired rounds get ejected pretty authoritatively, and magazines aren't part of the fire control system. Only thing I could see, is if they get actually dirty, or too much waxy build up from the cases. I'm not overly concerned about it anyways.
