CZ 858 no gunsmith side mount? Where do you get them?

CZ-858 No Gunsmith Side Rail - Kasat style

I'm not sure.. I'll ask him when I see him. I'll let you know.

Just curious if any further information about the availability of the no-gunsmith side rails for the CZ-858 platform has become available?

I'm wondering about both the the Kasat mount, or the rail that is bolted to the received using holes drilled (but not tapped) in the left side of the receiver.

I've already picked up a Neit Arms rear cantilever mount for one of my 858's (and added a modified SKS shell deflector - thanks to the Optics FAQ for this simple and inexpensive idea), but am thinking to go with a more "east bloc" style scope setup on one of the others, maybe a POSP 6x24 on an SVD side mount.

I've gone three years with iron sights only; now it's time to try something different.

The one in the top picture is using drilled and tapped holes that come like that from the factory.

OK, thanks, my mistake.

However, there is/was something that looked very similar to this either in the works or available for those of us whose 858's did not come equipped with side rails. I've been away from the forum for a while making visits to the hospital, so I've lost track of what happened with that idea or product.

Hey that pic looks like my rifle???

Kassat stopped making these a while back as me and many other people wish he didn't because they did work great.
Now the new CSA's have this mount already drilled and placed on the reciever straight from the factory from what I have seen. But what I have been really wishing for is a mount that attaches from the pistol grip whole and the rear butt stock whole to the reciever. That also is left with enough clearance to remove the bolt carrier from the right side of the rifle. Now the icing on the cake would be that the rail sits directley over the rear dust cover straight down the middle of the rifle.
This design in my opinoin would solve everyones optic needs. As the clearance needed to remove the bolt carier would also allow you to use iron sight's and with a check riser on your stock would be a perfect combo to use with an optic, red dot or holo sight. Right there in perfect placement position. I did a proto-type a while back but no one liked my idea although it was missing the rear butt stock idea that would lock the reward momentium & make it rock soild. Here is a pic of an idea I was thinking about;

Also NEA does have a similar idea that does work fine for my magnifer but I don't know about a scope though. Maybe some one else will chime in about it's repeatability of zero when it comes to optic's. Here is what it looks like;

The one that required no taping of the receiver was from Interammo. I have found it elsewhere but they are all now out of stock... http://www.movingtarget.ca/id71.html

Six months plus and waiting :(

That store was located in Entwistle AB and is now closed down FYI. So I wouldn't hold your breath for restocking any time, well...ever. Lol

I've driven through Entwhistle many a time but never noticed anything like a sign for them. Must have been either a) blindness on my part or b) their location was well hidden.

Oh well. Too bad, so sad.....

Satain,

I seem to remember that you designed a very ingenious mount that fitted to the pistol grip - made on your uncle's CNC milling setup, was it not?

I thought that looked like a great system and tried to figure a way to duplicate it without access to a milling machine or other machine tools. Unfortunately I never did come up with a satisfactory method, short of carving it out of a piece of billet material using grinder, file, and several years worth of elbow grease.

I agree with you that the two mounting points on the receiver - the hand grip and the butt stock - should allow making a mount that would be high enough to clear the dust cover, run straight down the centerline of the rifle, and still not interfere with ordinary cleaning or maintenance.

Kasat's other idea - the one that used the buttstock mount and the rear iron sight mount, and carried a full length rail - was also something that I still think is worth pursuing. I've seen pictures of the one he built, and it looked pretty solid.

I made a rear peep sight not unlike the Rauch Tactical one, using a small washer, some J-B Weld, and a spare rear sight leaf. It worked after a fashion, but my eyes are not getting any younger, and even a 4x optic would be a big help.

As to the CSA rifles having a side rail already mounted at the factory - great idea. However, my VZ-58 and CZ-858's were purchased long before CSA had even been invented, so the best I can hope for is a really solid aftermarket optic mounting system that's not ultra-finnicky to install.

The one other difficulty (?) with using the standard Russian side rail is not so much the drilling, or even tapping, or making a side adapter plate. It's where to position it, front to back, in order to get the correct amount of eye relief for a magnified optic. If a person goes this route, you pretty much have to have picked out a scope beforehand, and then use only that scope or one with similar eye relief. A mount with a weaver rail on top improves this to some degree, but it's still a factor to be considered.

not to my knowledge .

but moving target is located on highway 16 in entwistle.

kmartel, who is closing down ?
Moving target to my knowledge already has, unless he is doing online sales still. I picked up a piss load of discounted ammo and my buddy got his savage 110BA for a screaming deal due to his "closing out" sale last winter... Grass is also like a foot tall at the store. If I'm wrong I would love to hear that, but I am 95% sure the store is no longer open.

OK. so Moving Target have closed down, so that source of supply is gone. Interammo no longer list the side rail pictured below on their site and according to posts earlier in this thread, have not had any in stock for many months. Any other Canadian or otherwise accessible sources for this no-gunsmith side rail for the VZ-58/CZ-858 ? Since both of these suppliers were getting them from somewhere, who or where is the source?

I had word from Interammo that they don't have a source to make them. Sounds like the quotes they are getting are too pricey to have them made again.

I have a buddy that gets stuff machined in bulk over in China for dirt cheap per unit but I don't have the coin to drop on such a large order.

Anyone know a machinist/machine shop that could take it on?

Without a sample or a dimensioned drawing my machinist friend says he couldn't give or get any kind of estimate. Since _somebody_ was turning them out, this information must exist somewhere.

I'm hoping one might turn up in the EE.

If you guys are looking for side mounts also consider Eastwave, they carry all the mounts, including red dots and the scopes

Thanks very much for the tip. I have been looking on the Kalinka site, but I had forgotten about Eastwave. I don't know if any of the companies dealing in east bloc/POSP scopes and mounts have ever sold this particular rail, which is specific to the VZ-58 platform.

I guess if no-gunsmithing side rails are not available (and that appears to be the case), we can always go back to the excellent mounts devised by Curtton and Kasat, both written up in the optics FAQ:
