Hi,

Looking at making a purchase for a reliable and decently accurate semi-auto non-restricted rifle, preferably under $1K. Currently am considering either the CZ-858 or the Mini-14 with the potential to tac it up eventually. Intent is to go plinking, not looking for sub MOA accuracy... thoughts? Which would you choose, and why?

Thanks in advance.

How about a JR carbine in 9mm, I would think it would be a lot easier to add tacticool parts with the rails already in place,,,
If that doesn't interest you I would recommend the CZ with a nice Arma Coating,,, Good luck with your decision,,,

Mini hands down, comes in stainless which is remarkable for a semi rifle, that point alone is enough to swing the vote 100x. It is cheap, incredibly durable, and the new 580+ series more accurate than my CZ was. The 858's draw is it looks like an AK, if that's not important to you, a stainless Mini-30 is a better gun for these reasons:

-Stainless
-Better sights in the 580+ series
-Easier takedown for cleaning (pop out the trigger group by hand, and the whole rifle and incredibly simple gas system is immediately accessed)
-Integral, excellent scope mounts and rings included (HUGE plus)
-Solid, made in the USA stuff
-A plethora of accessories due to its decades of success and popularity in the #1 firearms market worldwide; USA.

CZ 858 all the way. They're light, fast handling, incredibly reliable and ammo is both cheap and reliable. For 1k you can get a rifle and over 1000 rds of ammo. Plus you won't be ###. (Big plus)

CZ858 all the way. Its some what uglier than a Ruger Mini30 but its probably going to be easier to get mags for the CZ in the next 2 years. I've owned a Mini14. Great rifle but hard to find mags. I've noticed the prices on new Mini rifles has gone way up over the last few years.
I also thought that Ruger made the barrels to only shoot American spec 7.62x39(.308 diam bullets)ammo instead of the cheap surplus 7.62x39(.311 diam bullets). I'm not sure but maybe someone else that has one can chime in.

Try them both out at the range and see what's more comfortable for you put at least 100rds in both down range...IMO get the Mini 14 for 5.56mm or Mini 30 7.62x30, make sure the RANCH version not the target.
The target version can only use .223 and the Ranch can shoot 5.56mm/NATO or .223 Rem.
In the long run you most likely will end having one of each...

Tough choice. Mini is great for getting anti's foaming at the mouth. The CZ is a military proven design that is a good price and shoots cheap ammo. Your choice.

Mine is more of a symbolic item in my safe since there is KAC SR15 & a CAR15 in the other safe.

Its used when I have guests come up to get a feel of a more traditional rifle as opposed to a carbine AR type.

I ve no complaints on it - put the loaded mag in and it works ! NON restricted but that a moot point for me since I shoot all my rounds between 3 clubs.

Have a VZ 58 and have used the mini on multiple occasions and honestly the mini is the one I would go with.

Much more accurate and reliable for what you would be looking for.

Thanks for all the opinions, these are exactly why I am having trouble deciding. I like the stainless option for the Ruger (definitely in the ranch model), but then there is something about CZ... Both have a proven design and are known for their reliability. Plan to fire both at the range is in the works.

Keep,'em coming. Any thoughts on what's more likely to end up on the restricted list if the feds ever get their appetite going in that direction?
