I like the idea of an unrestricted CZ 858 but also like the idea of having a chrome-lined barrel (since corrosive mil-surp ammo is cheaper than non-corrosive, from what I've seen). If one were to purchase an unrestricted CZ858:

1) Is it difficult to swap in the shorter chrome-lined barrel? Can one even buy a shorter chrome-lined barrel separately?

2) If one were to swap to a shorter barrel at home, what's the legal status for transport to a gun range? Technically it's registered as unrestricted but it's effectively restricted. I have no problem with the opaque case for transport but one wouldn't have an authorization-to-transport!

3) Does having a chrome-lined barrel really matter from a total maintenance perspective? If one were shooting corrosive ammo, the residue would get on all the internals, right? I would think that every part needs to get rinsed with water to dissolve the salts and prevent corrosion. Is this thinking correct?

I recognize that a chrome-lined barrel is not necessary with corrosive ammo if the rifle is regularly maintained but sometimes I may not get a chance to clean my guns until a day or two after shooting at the range. Not sure if that delay is long enough for corrosion to form.

1. I don't think it's in the least bit easy to swap the barrels out on these guns.
2. Even if you could, DONT! you would have made it restricted and will need an RPAL before you do it and an ATT to transport it.

Doesn't matter what you bought it as, as soon the bbl is shorter then 18.5 inches it's a restricted firearm (phroib if you saw it off)

Swaping barrel is not an option, they are pressed in and said to be very difficult to remove and a shorter barrel change the classification of the rifle i think. A non chrome bore can wait severals days to be cleaned, and its fast to do a short cleaning after range time. Barrel, gas block and piston must be flushed and its good to wipe the bolt face too. Do that and you wont have problems. Just my 2 cents:)

As for point 3. don't worry about a non-chrome barrel just clean it after.
Myself as well as LOTS of guys here have non- restricted, non-chrome lined CZ 858's and shoot them all the time without rust issues from mil-surp ammo.

Saw a video a few weeks back of how the factory installs the barrel: the barrel is placed in a fixture, then the receiver is heated up using electrical induction, receiver is then quickly placed into fixture, bolted in, and then using a long lever it's "pressed" together.

This seems to work well for the company, probably very cheap method, and clearly it has no effect on raw accuracy. BUT...it's simply not practical for any hobbyist to swap barrels.

Buy a .223 CSA non-restricted Vz 58 then. .223 is kind of cheap and its non-corrosive. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. You clean your gun after using it anyways and i've left my Cz 858 dirty for one week and it didn't form any rust in the barrel.
