...just removed my red-dot and scout scope mount from my 858.
I have very little experience shooting this rifle with the factory sights, come to think of it I rarely shoot anything open sights anymore as all my rifles wear optics and I'm a little out of practice
My question is regarding the adjustment range on the rear tangent. What position do you guys shoot with mostly? I currently am using the "1" setting and can make hits on a 14" diameter plate at 200 yds but I find that the front post in the notch obscures my target considerably. So I went back to the "U" but find it raises the rear leaf considerably  and I have trouble scoring hits in this position. My owners manual states the "U" setting is for night combat and moving targets out to 300 meters but does anyone know how this is implemented? do you just take a half a post or none at all and just use the rear notch??
So basically let me know how you guys shoot with factory sights. What position on the rear tangent? How much front post in the rear notch? I realize each rifle will shoot differently but there must be some kind of a standard practice I can try to get better accuracy.

Thx. for any help guys,

..only 19 views  Does anyone shoot their 858 with factory irons or does everyone have optics...I realize the post is long winded but I'm needing you guys' input here.

:welcome: Thx. for looking,
Mad Mikey. :p

The "u" setting is the "Battle sight", about 300m. If you push the sight to the 3 mark it will about the same height as the "u". To zero the rifle, use the front sight, screw it in to go higher, screw it out to go lower, set the rear sight on 100 and zero at 100m. The front sight may be mover to the leaft or the right to correct for windage. I shoot my 858 and 58 with iron sights all the time and have found them to be quite accurate.

Don't forget the rifle is issued fully automatic. The U is for Universal and means if you can see it and its out there, go to town!

...good point I hadn't thought of.
So is it generally agreed that the "1" setting on the rear tangent sight is the default position for most shooters?
How much front post do you guys use in the rear notch? ie. do you take the full post [fill the rear notch] or do you just use half or maybe just the tip?. Do you place your target or bullseye just above the post or do you cover it with the post?. Again I realize every rifle and or rifleman shoots different I just want to hear other peoples techniques of using these sights most accurately for them.

Thx. for the feedback,
Mad Mikey:runaway:

You use these sights just like a handgun, level the front with the notch, equal ammount of light on either side of the sight. I use a centre of mass hold with this type of sight with some pretty good results. Unfortunatly, the cartridge does not go fast enough to "Level the trajectory" so you can't really use a 6 oclock hold with this gun. If you use a centre of mass, and the sight the way I have described, then after zeroing at 100m, the sight graduations work just fine.

I shoot mine much like m39a2 does. I have good success out to 400m. I'd go back further but the target gets real hard to see.

When I first got mine though I found that the elevation was kinda wacky. I was shooting at the gong from 200m and found that I couldn't hit anything unless I had it set at 3. A front post adjustment fixed that.

In terms of the U, I have yet to use it and I've had the gun for a year. I think John M has got that figured out pretty well.
