Hi,
Thought I'd share my happy experience from today, I bought a scout mount a couple of years ago, the red dot I bought at the time had a flimsy set screw to maintain zero, which stripped. . Well, I bought a Bushnell TRS-25 and mounted that, and I'm really pleased. The scout mount that replaces the rear sight is solid, and the TRS-25 is so small you can hack-saw three segments of the picatinney rail, and with some filing, you can take the upper handguard off without removing the reddot for cleaning. After a couple hundred rounds today, really happy with the performance. The TRS-25 only mounts to the rail with one soft screw, snug it and then a quarter turn, as the instructions tell you, I have research this and over torquing the one screw has been a problem for many people.
One drawback to the spacing on the rail is you cannot use the stripper clips to load the magazine, the points of the bullets are really close to the optics, and nobody wants a scratch. I guess the choice is yours, using stripper clips or taking off the top gas tube.
Overall, nice, really compact red dot, solid mount.

Sounds like you have the same scout mount that I do, and have modified it the same way. I've been using a Burris Fastfire on the shortened mount as you describe for about 2 years now, with no problems whatsoever. I've never tried using stripper clips.

here you go, Clobber.
