Hi ladies/gents, I was out of the country for a extended period of time and just got home to a real sh*t suprise. Long story short & let me state the obvious here first. This is my fault for not having the time to properly instruct them on the maintenance of all the firearms I had entrusted them with (in my defence I have shown them the proper way to clean these rifles about a thousand times, but knowledge like this never sticks with teen-agers because it ain't a fu**in X-box or related to a Iphone...wait they're may be an app for this....sigh), I was very busy with work-ups etc, and yes they are valid PAL R/PAL holders just not very experienced. So here it is, they (my boys) went out with my 858's and SKS's and shot through all my non-corrosives, which is cool I told em go nuts! Well they went out and bought some Czech corrosive (my money) fired about 2000 rounds combined through the rifles without cleaning them properly afterwards. (asked them to show me exactly how they did it and I had a f***in cardiac, and I'll save the embarassment of posting what they actually did...... this just re-affirms I need to leave my work alone and spend more time making them into proper young men and being a better father). Had them sit there 6 months before I came home on leave, then they decided they would get them all dolled up for dad upon my return, dunked them into a bathtub with dish soap and water, air dried them then just dumped all my Hoppes#9 oil down the barrels and let them sit. Well long story short my tour was extended, I came home for two weeks and didn't even want to look at my guns...so I didn't. I make it home 4 months later to find my barrels full of carbonized sh*t and rust. Is there any hope in recovering these rifles? I like most of you folks am a working man and cannot afford to go out and simply replace them. Any tips on ridding myself of the rust. I have spent probably close to 8 hours on each rifle trying to clean it but with little success, I get the carbon etc out and clean a majority of the rust but with no lasting effect. The rust always returns. Anyone got a final solution so the barrels & actions stops oxidizing?

I have already:
Cleaned and scrubbed every conceivable and accessable part
Soaked the bolt assembly in oil for about a week
Scrubbed the barrell with a poly/nylon coarse brush then scrubbed with clean swabs
Gratiously coated the barrel & action with Hoppes#9
Bought and ran through some stuff called 7.62 solution then followed the outlined steps above again...

All to little or no effect.

I'm running out of idea's and apart from spending $200 on gun oil and soaking the entire rifle in a oil bath for a week, I am at a loss as to what else I can do to help restore the metals resistance and integrity. I'm not into metalergy but I'm begining to think it may become helpful.

Your thoughts are appreciated because pretty soon I'm going to have to give it all up and retire. I'll be in a wheelchair because my feet will be to pre-occupied, being that my size 12's will be firmly implanted up my two sons asses for the foreseeable future. Thanks ladies and gents in advance.

if that was me when i was yung my dad would have me digging ditchs in the desert to make the money to buy him new ones.

Are the barrels pitted if they are i am sorry but you may be SOL.

I have a sneaking feeling those barrels and rifles are beyond repair.

I'd suggest that your "kids" be buying you new ones to replace the FUBAR'd ones.

May I suggest putting your size 12's up their bungholes AFTER they replace the guns???:p

Kids aye ?
I don't know what to suggest here as I've never had that problem . It sounds like you've tried everything I would have suggested , but there are people here that know a great deal more then I do , and hopefully they will chime in here .
Best I would offer is soaking it in Hoppes overnight then using the bristle brush . Keep trying that .

Sorry to say they may be :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:ed.

If I did that do my Dad's guns you can believe he'd see to it that I was buying new him new ones. I would suggest doing the same.

You'll need somethign to neutralize to corrosive salts. Try scrubbing with OIL and a bronze brush. Scrub 5-6 strokes, push a patch through, scrub, patch, until they come out clean/free of everything but oil.

Disassemble all of the bolts and gas tubes/pistons. Scrub everything down with oily steel wool and remove all visible rust. Spray everything down with a can of non chlorinated brake cleaner to remove all of the oil.

Place all small parts in a tupperware tub or something similar and fill it up with something that will neutralize the salts. I use dollar store windex style glass cleaner (it's $2 for a gallon). Shake and agitate everything around. Dump it into the actions and down the barrels. Flush everythign THOROUGHLY.

Dry everything with a clean cloth, air compressor, somethign that will get them all TOTALLY dry. Dry patches through the bore to remove all of the liquid.

NOW oil the hell out of everything. You will use a lot. ATF is about 5 bucks a litre.

If they're old enough to take your guns out, they're old enough to replace the ones they f*cked up.

Ar180shooter is right.

Sometimes, a lesson IS best learned the hard way... You learned that you can not 'yet' trust them to take care of YOUR firearms... And, THEY will learn a valuable lesson by doing the RIGHT thing & paying to replace Dad's guns with NEW ONES!

If you do anything other than the above, you are shortchanging YOURSELF & YOUR SONS...

I will say, good on you for getting them into the shooting sports & allowing them to use your guns. Damn shame they were irresponsible with your prized possessions.

Cheers
Jay

If they were my two, they wouldn't have much asses left! Seriously, if they're old enought to f%$& with your toys, they're old enough to earn the dollars to replace them.

BTW, thank you for serving our country.

You've covered what needs to be done.. Now, we can move the discussion to blind approval of sending the following links to the little punks:

And I hope the youngsters enjoy the rifles they acquired through meticulous testing both with non-corrosive and corrosive ammo.

P.S. Thank you for your service

Don't waste your time trying to save the SKS, the 858 is perhaps worth saving or once they have replaced the rifle you can give them the crapped out ones as a reminder.

Clean in hot soapy water now and again - it'll get some of the salts out as you go. If they're super rusty and caked you'll have to do this intermittently as you clean and expose new stuff. Plus water washes away the gunk better than oil. Oil just covers stuff up - stops oxidization by covering parts. Doesn't really do a great job actually cleaning things, which is why you use it after cleaning, or during cleaning of not very dirty guns.

Secondly, scrub brushes - super stiff nylon brushes are good, but if your bluing is gone and we're talking honest to got caked rust, you might be using a brass brush.

For the bore, an electronic bore cleaner might be in order. I've used them on very badly fouled and rusted bores to good effect. They're kindof a last ditch thing, but also a lot less aggressive or toxic than any of the chemical cleaners. Instead of all those fancy home made systems using batteries, soldering, switches and lights I used a 3 or 4 volt cell phone charger with stripped ends... works beautifully, won't electrocute you and won't eat your bore, unlike the more powerful ones.
You can piece together how to do it from these sites, just use a low voltage cell charger instead of their weird electronic rigs. Dead simple system, but try it on your SKS first. Also, scrub your bore and replace the fluid between sessions for better, faster results. Many short sessions are better than one long session.

Finally - make your kids do all this, then give the guns to them and make you buy knew ones. You break it you buy it applies. If they clean up nicely then you can keep them and they've still payed you back.

You can try CLR but it will remove any and all blueing as well.

If that fails to fix the problem, then they owe you 2 new guns and the keys/combo to your safe or cabinet. You owe them both a hard kick in the ass, repeatedly, and the promise that they will never have to worry about damaging your guns again as they will never lay a hand on one again. If they are old enough to have a PAL, then they are old enough to get jobs (if they haven't already) and buy their own guns that they can destroy in any way they see fit.

The reason I was asking if you are a serving member of our armed forces, is that if the kids don't man up and buy you new ones, I'd like to offer a donation to help replace them. I'm a working man myself, but my work doesn't put me in harms way for my country, and if yours does, I'd like to do something to say thank you. I'm sure others would join in.
