so, now that i finally wrenched my "wood" butt stock off to paint, i like the shortened look better:cool:
i tried to read thru the faq, but started to fade out at 0200 hrs, basically i'm unsure of which folding stock works best with the factory irons, as i'm not yet planning on adding optics.
i've web-browsed some from palinak, and the factory folder offered by wolverine, also the fab defense one(which looks very nice, but also looks like it makes the folded rifle very thick) and am looking for opinions:)
thanks

any optic you use , you will need a cheek rest for comfort. i use the reg metal side folder with a home made plastic rest that gave me an extra inch .

i wasn't planning on adding an optic as of yet, so for the time being, how comfortable is the steel side folder when shooting with irons?
how thick is your folder with the cheek adapter added to it?
close to the thickness of the fab defense folder?
thanks

how comfy? well , without the rest , you can figure that out for yourself , imagine a skinny square steel against your face .

thickness? mine is super slim . see for yourself .

i just ordered a FAB from BBB this morning , he has a clearance special so i will let you know when i get it .

so am i the only person who has to mash my face down into the factory stock to line up the iron sights, rattling my teeth everytime i shoot:confused:
i'm not saying its not a fun gun, it is, but i've never had a sore cheek from shooting before:redface:
i am now reversing my previous comments and will be adding an optic as well as replacing the stock.
i am thinking of a red dot mounted to a scout scope mount, the kind that fits over the rear leaf.
with that setup, would a straight back ar stock mount be sufficient to aling the optic?

I would suggest an ar-15 style stock...have a look here:

it looks like a FAB ar stock, cheaper from wolverine or you can get a FAB galil stock for $175 from badboybeeson .

i've been oogling palinaks, stormwerkz, and wolverine's websites for a couple of weeks now, but am looking for any users input on how well the ar15 stock adapters align with a redot mounted on a scout scope rail.
as in, do you need cheek risers or not.
i just find that with the factory stock, a comfortable cheek weld puts my sight line over the irons, so i'm worried that if i put a straight stock adapter i might be too high for the optic, but if i put a slanted adapter, i might be too low.
i guess worst case scenario i buy both, and the one that doesn't work for me, i sell

Metal folders are never comfortable unless you have a cheekrest. You can use a field dressing or cloth wrapped around the metal to get your face at the right height and spare your teeth.

a straight line stock should be about right with the scout mound and a reasonably low mounted red dot you will likely need a cheek riser to use an eotech or the like.

I looked at the Stormwerkz straight stock adapter. Recoils should be better but for those of you with a VZ how do you think the iron sights would line up?

I wonder if they sit to low with that stock?

with my "facial geometry", hey no jokes, the factory sloped stock puts my sight line over the irons as it is, unless i crank the range up to the 8 slider.
i think the straight type adapters are specifically designed for optics.

I run a factory folder with my nose right up to the receiver cover. I get a perfect sight picture and none of this face pain or discomfort you all talk about.

Any type of cheek rest would make it very tough to use the irons for me. I don't think one will be necessary for running a red dot either.

OK, the Dr took the staples out of my arm today so I finally shot it.

I thought there were some real girlz shooting these because I keep reading they kick like a mule. Well I was suprised at the recoil. Seems way more than the SKS I used to have. Perhaps it's the mass of that big bolt carrier and the slant of the stock?

Back on topic. Is there anyone using a folder of any kind with their 858 that's longer and a bit more comfortable to shoot? I was going to get the factory folder but I'm not sure now. Longer would definatly be better for me (I'm 6' 3").
