As I am still waiting for my new VZ 58 in 7.62 39 mm to be repaired for the the second time this time by Movie Arms?(Cant remember the name but not North Sylva this time round) Anyways, I could not wait so I managed to pick up a new(less than 30 rounds and looks it) CZ 858 Tac 2 NR. While I was playing with it I in countered a couple of possible issues and thought I would ask opinions. I have not fired it yet but hope to in the beginning of Oct.

1, When pulling the carrier back slowly and releasing it slowly it appears to catch on the trigger release pin?(I can see the trigger move) and the carrier will remain stuck open. It takes a fair bit of force to release it. When I pull the carrier back and release it on its own spring loaded power it cocks the firing pin and so far has not jammed. both methods seem to #### the firing pin. Not sure if this is the beginning of the Gremlin or not. Every time so far it does #### the firing pin.

2, when installing my Corwin arms aluminum railed top hand guard I had a heck of a time installing the bolt for the guard as the holes were not fully lined up. With some force the guard did install but appears slightly uneven and upon further inspection it appears the gas port(actually more like the whole barrel) is very slightly miss aligned to the frame? On my VZ 58 it fits like a dream. This gun is truly new in every way with absolutely no evidence of use or the typical marks and dents on the internals after a few hundred rounds.

Looking for some opinions before I shoot it. I seem to have bad luck with these rifles.

Thanks

When you pull the carrier back it is supposed to #### the striker no matter how you pull it back.

What's the matter with your CSA ?

Don't worry about the railed top hand guard if the rifle works without it.

PS, I think Movie Armaments Group know what they are doing.

I have a previous Thread on on my CSA (VZ 58) but the first time I used it the bolt broke and the second time the carrier cracked about 200 rounds through it.

That is very unfortunate. Spent a C-note on the thing and it has been warranted longer than I have owned it. I heard very good things about them prior to owning it and now seems like a bad dream. I enjoyed shooting the few rounds through the pipe to date but the most unreliable piece of equipment I own. my 73 VW van as a kid was more reliable and it ended up at the junker in less than a year. When I get it back I am going to shoot the piss out of it and dismantle it after every 20 rounds for inspection(for my personal safety) Next time it breaks I have been assured my money back by the seller.
csa vz58=fail

Find a good used cz858. Plain and simple cz858 is a real proven military rifle that does not fail. The gremlin is NOT a big a deal people make it out to be just learn how to pull the trigger. My 858 has the gremlin and its only happened to me about 5 times in 1000 rounds.

You know I've heard all sorts of complains about the CSA version, however only ever from two people, mattcwc and Rick911. It would be nice to hear some new voices on the subject instead of the usual rhetoric from the usual culprits.

I own a CSA 7.62, and NO it's not that much better! my probs are do to the low quality steel/heat treatment. It's sad to say but I think this poor girl will have a low round count/life compared to my CZ.

Sometimes new does not mean better :(

I have both. Both have treated me well. I have some wear marks starting on the rails of my cz. My csa's are both .223 and they seem very tight and nicely out together. I like the platform and my cz858 is my go to gun. I would buy another.

All the 858 rifles have the gremlin. It's a design flaw which was not rectified by CZ. Anyone with a modicum of trigger control should be able to reproduce the failure without much trouble. The fix, which they all require, is to have the bolt carrier tabbed.
The reliable function of a rifle should not be limited based on how one pulls a trigger.

I've shot just close to 2000 rounds through my cz858 and I've not had the gremlin bite me yet...
I must have those magic czech fingers

If I rest the rifle on sandbags, and finesse the trigger like I am shooting an accurate bolt gun, I have been able to reproduce the gremlin in every 858 I have shot, including the four which I owned.

So given your experience with the CSA and CZ versions, which do you recommend?

I have put thousands of rounds through mine (7.62) without a single issue. I'm actually fed up with the amount of cleaning I have to do using corrosive ammo, so I think I'm going to bite the bullet (lol) and buy better ammo. Hell; if I can afford to fire my DE .50, I guess I can afford better food for my CZ.

Providing you are talking 7.62 models, I think you would be pleased with either. The CSA buys you a prettier finish, an excellent five year warranty, no gremlin, easier mounting of side optics, and fewer potential complications based on the lineage of the receiver. The CZ buys you a more historically interesting firearm, and parts which are absolutely milspec. Both firearms have had examples with issues. My first CZ crapped out so hard that Wolverine allowed me to exchange it for an Armalite, after they were unable to repair it the first time. (As a side note, the service from Wolverine was excellent, and they do stand behind their product). On the flip side some CSA rifles have had issues, particularly on the 5.56 rifles, but on some 7.62 as well.
If you pay attention to the negative CSA threads, you will see that the majority of the mudslinging comes from one or two members, who have no first hand experience with the product.
Buy either one and be happy.

My Vz.58 (chrome lined, black furniture) has been absolutely flawless, other than having to add some loc-tite and tighten the buffer tube in the stock when I first got it.
