Just wondering if anyone owns a CZ-97 and their opinion of it - I'm considering buying one, but would like to know what others who have used it/own one think. I hope this hasn't been discussed here . . . I tried to search feature, but found little information . . . I do know they have a rather large grip due to the double stack mag . . . I've held one at a local store & that is not a problem as I have larger mitts.

Good choice for a non-1911?

I sure like the gun, and its super accurate:rockOn: Only the sights could use an upgrade.

I have one. It is a great gun but you better have big hands. The frame and grips are huge. Feeds and shoots excellent.

Hmmm . . . like I said, I've held one (never shot it) and it seemed to feel okay, but I wasn't thinking about it at the time. I read later about some complaining about the large grip which has made me think.

Not sure if this is a good measure, but when I have an open hand (fingers all spread out) my hand measures 9" from the tip of my thumb to my pinky . . . how does that compare to your hands?

I'm not sure thumb to pinky spread is the right measure. I have 9" spread but have a small hand. Maybe finger length is more important. If you can comfortably hold it you can shoot it.

My hand is 81/4 in. If your hand is that big. you won't have a problem. If you shoot the first round da, it's a long reach. I shoot single action. I think the only problem is the size. But not sure what accessories are available. Mine is a 2002. I just compared it to my 75 and wow it is definitly a big brother. You can't go wrong with a CZ. AGE

Another option worth considering is the Tanfoglio Witness CZ 75 clone. The .45 version of these has a slimmer grip than the CZ 97.

I have one and it is a great gun. It is large as all have mentioned.

The Tangoglio in the right model in .45acp has a smaller grip and likely is better value if you have anything but large hands. Go one model up on the Witness and you get better sights then that found on the Witness. The Tans are excellent but a bit more money.

The downside to the CZ 97B for me was it is to heavy for IDPA and there isn't much you can do to get it down in weight. It is an accurate pistol but I do agree the sights leave someting to be desired.

Take Care

Yeah, that makes sense. My index finger from the base of my thumb is about 5.5" . . . I think I'll be okay with the size of the grip. Might go back to the store and hold it again just to be sure (although I'm abit reluctant due to the fact I'm not going to buy it there & I've been in alot lately).

I did read that some got a trigger job done when they bought theirs. Is this a good idea? Is that mainly for competition reasons? I won't be competing anytime soon . . . just for occaisional range fun.

A fantastic gun !

sure, you better have big hands...

on the other "hand" it is very well made and super accurate,

here is a target I shot, and I consider myself to be a lousy shot by all means :

I love mine. I don't really have much to add to the earlier comments except to reiterate that it is indeed a big, beefy gun, but if you have larger than average hands that's actually a good thing IMO - it fills the hand nicely and really helps with recoil. The weight makes it easily the most controllable and soft-shooting production .45 I've ever shot, and its also the most accurate.

My only complaints are that the sights are pretty basic, and looking back I think I'd prefer the newer model with a decocker instead of a manual safety. Other than that I love it and will probably buy another somewhere down the road.

I should probably start a new thread for this question, but:

I've narrowed things down to:

STI Spartan & the CZ 97

Any thoughts on that comparison?

Both seem to be very solid guns but I can get the Spartan much sooner and don't have to worry about the grip size. And yes, I am aware that the Spartan is subbed out to Armscor in the Philipines . . . not too concerned about that - very solid & reliable from I've read - goes through the same QC as any other STI gun.

long time ago I was told, an accurate automatic pistol should chamber an emty round smoothly and without any hesitation...

the only two guns in my collection which are chambering an empty shell are the CZ 97 and the STI Trojan in 40 S&W...

you might call this coincidence, I call it a sure sign of an accurate handgun, because this two pistols are the most accurate handguns I ever shot.

I do own a Spartan as well....
