I haven't been on this site for quite a while but recently i got the itch for a bolt action 22LR. The past week ive been reading what ever i can find and scouring the canadian gun stores for a CZ or a Brno.

I've found several but having a hell of a time deciding.
cz452-2E zkm Synthetic $550
Brno mod#5 $550
Brno mod#2 $570
Brno mod #2 $550
Brno mod #2 -EH $450
Anschutz 1441/42 $500
And there is a few on this site another Brno #2 for and a Cz pro varmint both are priced higher. Most of the Brno's are missing some part of the rear sight or front sight hood. Just assuming it was from trying to get a low scope mounting .

New guns I've found are
CZ 457 Americam Beech $650
CZ 457 American synthetic $550

I came across some small mentions of the later Cz / Brno change over rifles having 12 groove rifling. Any issues with that.

The used guns I found off the site I would say they are Good to Good plus condition. Nothing special about the wood. That I can fix as I've refinished a lot of stocks over the last 30 yrs.
The gun is going to be used for gopher shooting and the odd informal bench shooting just to see what myself , ammunition and the gun can actually do.
99% of the use will be a gopher gun.

How long of a barrel do you prefer? I have owned brno 1,2e,3,4,5 cz 452,455,457 and my favorite of them all has been the 1, 5 and 452 scout. I prefer the 16 and 20 inch barrels. They have all been very accurate and well made rifles.
The new cz are a great rifle but they have (in my opinion) cheapened the machining process by eliminating the bolt lug, and told the customer they have improved the product by adding the switch barrel ability.

I'd prefer 20" I think. The 16 looks to short to me. I have a mossberg 148B that has a 22" barrel I think and that seems fine. I know so.e of the brno's come in 24" but that would be ok for gopher work . Worse comes to worse I can always chop the barrel down and recrown it on my lathe.

The switch barrel is a nice option for guys that would want to do that but I'm not interested in the 17 or 22mag. It's expensive enough to shoot gophers now with just 22lr. I've gone to gopher patches and the guys laugh when I only bring 2000 rounds. They bring a brick and when we leave the fields are still crawling with gophers . We hardly put a dent in the population. Lol

Then you should go for the #5 from your list as if I remember correctly, it has a 20 inch barrel. (might be 20 point something as it is likely metric. I think the 2e was 24.4 inches. 16 inch isn't too short though, I read somewhere that a 22lr achieves maximum velocity in 16 inches of barrel and after that it slows down. (of course that likely varies depending on what ammo is used too)
To me, a switch barrel is a stupid idea unless you can only own a certain number of guns. Otherwise, who wants to re zero your scope every time you switch barrels?
I am envious of how many gophers you have there. In my area, I know of four areas that have ground squirrels. They are all about an hours drive from me, and you'd be hard pressed to get 30 in a day.....

I've shot a really good pile of gophers with a BRNO 2E with iron sights, so I can confirm that combo is decent. Nicest irons I've used on a 22,and the only reason I kept mine as long as my eyes would cooperate. That has the LUX style stock=poor choice for scope use.

First choice=457 American
Second choice=452 with the synthetic stock

It'll be easier to find a scope that fits the 457, it has a lower bolt throw. Both are really good options from a shooting perspective but today with both options, I'd probably do the new 457.

457 synthetic new at $600 and tax seems like good value. The Brno #5 is a nice rifle but resale is slower than the newer CZ. You will be happy with either as both are good shooters. It’s worth while getting something that pleases you as you might keep it rest of your shooting years.

I chuckle when I see high end quality rifles suggestions being parroted ad nauseum
when there are so many other options for good 22s
made my day thanks
Maybe what you think are great .22's really aren't. Outside of CZ/Brno, Tikka and Anshutz the rest are disposables. Especially the new versions.

If you're looking for a "good option" you could poke around the 9 sections of gopher access I shoot for 6 days every year and you might find the Ruger 10/22 I hurled 3-4 years ago. I'd even drop you a pin for its ballpark location.

Utter garbage, much like 85% of all plastic 22's manufactured these days.

Now I'm interested.

I thought it was a bit refreshing to see that the OP wasn't shopping the Bass Pro flyer for Savage 64s @ $199 and instead, asking about good quality bolt actions. Every 22 I've tried/used has gone "bang" when I pulled the trigger, doesn't mean they were all created equally or anything close.

Also, with the gap between these^ kinds of options and new Savage bolt actions closing price-wise (as one example) I'd say the domestic options have some explaining to do.

On the other side of the coin... Having owned or used almost every .22 that is out there, common and otherwise, based on my experience, I think I have earned the right to express preferences. There are lots of OK rifles, lots of crap rifles, and a handful of really good to great rifles.

I bought a 452 Varmint on here a couple years ago for 550 shipped with a Timney trigger. I then got a used Pro Varmint stock for it with 24x scope I figured it would be a good contender for the 1/2" challenge while not spending too much. I am still working to get there. I don't seem to get any real noticeable flyers so am putting it up to the wind and me. Groups are good usually below .600ctc and have scored several .300 groups just can't seem to do it five times on the same sheet without other holes. As I understand it the Varmint does not have a "Match chamber" but is tighter than most and it is a very nice rifle that I could probably have a lot more fun with if I could leave the challenge alone. Also if you want to save weight I probably wouldn't go with the Pro Varmint stock but I really just shoot mine benched with bags. I found the factory stock grip to be a little to curved to get a got hold while rested. I am very happy with it though the build quality and handling is above and beyond basically anything else I have used before.

Well 1 CZ down. I bought a CZ 452 Classic of a member here. Just waiting for it to be shipped.
Now I'm looking at another 452 in varmit with a walnut stock, no scope just the rail. Forget the name of the rail.
Another is a 455 synthetic with a vortex 4x12 scope, muzzle break or what ever it is that CZ has . Both guns are $700 each. The 452 varmit has the yodave trigger job.
There is also a used 457 lux with a nice walnut stock, also $700 just not sure what they are like using a scope on. My eyes are past using open sights.

The 457 and 455 are from dealers and the 452 is private sale. So taxes I guess on 2.
Plus I am still on the fence about the original options. Kinda would like to get a Brno #2 or #5.
I haven't bought any powder burners in years, been on a high power air rifle kick for a few years. I figure after 12 of them it's time to try something else.
I have a 4 air rifles I need to sell and one 30-06 to sell. They will fund at least 2 of the cz rifles.
