CZ dovetail size - Help!

For the first time I'm putting a scope on a rimfire, a new CZ-452 left handed. I did a little searching and Talley rings were well regarded, and I saw listed on Amazon, Talley Rimfire Rings for CZ, "Easy peasy," I say to myself.

The rings arrive and the dovetail is too small for the rail. I do a little more searching on the 'net and it seems like CZ dovetail sizes vary a bit from model to model. I also found conflicting information on where to measure the "size" of a dovetail. I took some pictures, hopefully showing the dimensions I've got.

The wide part of the dovetail on the rifle is pretty much 0.5 inches, so I'm guessing this is the 13mm rail that I see people talking about?

Are the Talley rings that I bought (see my pic) the "European" 3/8 dovetail or the "American" 3/8" dovetail?

Leupold lists 11mm, 3/8 and 13mm size dovetails. Which of these would I want? Is there something better?

Thanks in advance for any help.

No worries, it can be confusing with CZs but I am sure we can figure it out. Can you measure the width of the dovetail at the widest point (the top). Also what model of 452 did you get?

It should measure exactly 13 mm. If that's the case, you have the 3/8 dovetail. Don't get confused that the top measures 13 mm (which is not 3/8), the North American 3/8 dovetail configuration is actually measured at the base (narrow part) of the dovetail.
What kind of ring height are you looking for (give me the distance between the top of the dovetail and the bottom of the scope)? What scope are you planning to use? What is the Talley part number for the rings that you have?

Kody, I don't know the Talley part number exactly. I bought the rings from Amazon and they list it as "Talley Rimfire Rings for CZ Scope Mount". Looking at the Talley site, that could be the "European 11mm" rings then. My top rail is 13mm, so it is the 3/8 inch rail.

I'm looking to mount a Nikon Target EFR 3x9 scope. I tried it out with these Talley mediums, and it looked like a good height. I just want to make sure the bolt doesn't hit the eyepiece.

Thanks again.

You have probably bought the 11 mm Tally (22CZRH). The part number should be on the sticker that is on the bottom of the box. I think you will need to get Talley’s “CZ 452, 453 American 1"” rings (they will fit your 3/8 dovetail). Unfortunately Talley has changed their website and I can’t find the actual height for their rings to suggest a part number. I got my 11mm Talley rings from Prophet River. They have a decent selection on their website. Why don’t you give them a call or e-mail them and they should be able to tell you the actual height for what they have and confirm the fit on 3/8 dovetail. Other option is to call Talley 1-800 number.

I used to have a 3-9x40 Prostaff Rimfire mounted on my CZ455. I believe that scope has the same eye piece diameter as your scope (1.73 in). The scope had to be quite high to clear the CZ bolt (the main reason I eventually pulled it off). Just looking at my old notes here I believe the bottom of the scope tube needs to be about .625 above the dovetail to clear the bolt with some decent clearance. I used J&P adapters and Burris Signature Zee rings in high. BKL257 rings would also work on the 3/8 dovetail but the scope will be .725 above the dovetail (quite high).

I am sure other rimfire shooters will be able to come up with other options they use on their 3/8 dovetail

If your CZ is a 3/8" then any standard Talley ring will fit as talley rings have a 3/8" bases. If 11mm, Talley makes a ring clled the CZ Rimfire in low and high 1". 3/8" is much 'better' as you can put any STD Talley ring on. :)

Thanks to all for the help. Kody, I am out of town right now and don't have the rifle in-hand to try it again, but I'm pretty sure I checked the bolt clearance with my wrong-sized Talley high rings (0.600 above the dovetails) and it was okay. I will double check when I get back and post results.

rimfire centeral has a spreadsheet that lists what shooters are using,,,,,,,,,,, have a look

Anytime I am asked about "claw type mounting systems". I tell the person to go to a gun smith; tap and drill and put in a proper cross bolt mount Weaver Style. You will be much farther ahead in the future. Claw types are not reliable and will loosen I don't care what brand it is. With the Weaver style bases you have great flexibility and a solid mounting system. Believe me I am talking experience here.

Update: I finally got myself in the same location with with rifle, scope and high Talley 22 Rimfire Rings (22RFRH for the Extremely Curious). Mounted on a CZ452 with a Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x scope there is good barrel clearance and enough bolt knob clearance. There isn't enough space between the bolt and the eyepiece for a finger but it is plenty comfortable to work it without either the bolt or my hand hitting the eyepiece.

Thanks again!

Sounds like you're sorted out. For future reference:
