I'd be interested in everyone's opinion on the CZ Mallard vs the Baikal IZ 27. From what I've read, my uninformed impression is the Baikal may be more durable, while the CZ may be better balanced and perhaps prettier.

A fairly close description, except i wouldn't say the CZ is better balanced. The CZ is slightly slimmer so it feels different in your hand. Actual balance is about the same in both. The Baikal is hard to beat if you're looking for bang for your buck. The CZ looks nicer to most people.
Hello, I was just inquiring about the Mallard when I saw your post.
Here's a quote from my thread:
Just called a dealer with Mallard's in stock. He explained that while it was prettier than the Condor, many of the units they've sold have come back with serious issues: double fire, failed safety and frankly I forget the third because I was in shock. He said Condor over Mallard, and he doesn't even stock the Condor right now.
3006, I read your post. Scary. I saw that Epps has a Mallard in stock. Pretty gun, but I don't want to be one of the 30%. I may end up with a pump too.
Thanks
I've been doing a bit of research on CZ guns; if you read the negative reports on them, check the dates and authors. Most of the negative stuff on the internet dates back to 2005-2006, and most of the stuff on shotgunworld.com seems to have been the same 3-4 guys showing up in every thread about CZ shotguns and bashing them. Same pattern that I saw when buying my M-14's; there were a few guys who have a hate-on for Norinco and who never shut up about it. And there are a lot more people who like them but who don't seem to want to spend their time on forums repeating practically the same complaint over and over and over every time somebody posts about CZs.
Haters gonna hate. So I ordered the CZ (a Partridge).
The information I posted in this thread I posted about 24 hours earlier in a thread that I started regarding the Mallard. crunch86, I think we're both in the same 'under 500 for a O/U boat'.
I called Epps because the price on their site was a lot lower than the mssrp that I found(factoring exchange as well).
My information came from a phone call to Epps where the very friendly and courteous staff member explained that the price was not a typo. Upon further inquiry, he explained that over the past 10 Mallard sales, 3 had come back for those serious reasons.
It was enough to set me off of value priced O/U's.
Thanks for the info, 3006novice. I really appreciate it.
It was very admirable of Epps to be so straight forward with you.
rdelliot, Some of the CZ guns get very good reviews. Enjoy your new gun.
