CZ or Stainless Savage?

Had a chance to shoot a Bruno on the weekend. It was doing some amazing things. Want to try it again to see if it is for real. By the way the Ruger needs a heavy barrel to put it in this discussion. The trigger does not improve the accuracy, it just makes it easier to shoot well.

It absolutely does make it more accurate. When you shoot a 5lb gun with a 10lb trigger pull it tends to jump around a bit.

Also 10/22's don't need to have a heavy barrel to be accurate. I have a 10/22 with all stock parts that heve been tweaked and reworked and I had a few 1/2" at 50 yard groups today. The average was closer to 3/4" though which I consider very acceptable for a stock semi-auto.

I like the savage trigger, the stainless finish, & the fire sights on the FSS model. This one is in the .22 LR chambering.

Not fussy about the plastic stock, but if it ever breaks, the replacement will be wood!
For tin cans, paper, & small game, it's plenty accurite.

So far this year it killed some paper, 4 or 5 tin cans, 4 grouse, & soon a few rabbits...
Also with the single shot adapter, it shoots the short ammo with ease.

I hope you consider the savage, you would like the FSS model!

ruffbird!

Thanks for posting your target. I want much better accuracy than that however. My 1022 is better. Sort of leaning towards the CZ.

Believe me, don't go based on that target. No offense to the poster but it can shoot WAYYYY better than that with a scope. I've seen many savages including one I owned that could easily shoot groups you can cover with a dime at 50m. That target is a very poor representation of it's accuracy potential, likely because it was shot with iron sights which most people can't shoot as well as a scoped rifle.

I haven't shot a CZ but have fondled a few. The fit and finish is fairly nice. I am however, in the same boat as you with the preferance for stainless. I have a Savage BSEV and am very happy with it. With a little trigger adjustment to lighten it up, I have been able to fit 5 under a dime at 50 yards repeatedly with some decent ammo. Don't count out the Savage. If you buy a little higher end model you get a better stock. Most of the laminate stocks on the heavy barrel stainless are made by Boyd's and are a relatively decent stock for the prices they charge. The plastic stocks are garbage though, I've seen a wet noodle hold its shape better...

I love my CZ 452 Varmint in .22lr. Had a 452 American in .17hmr before that and it was excelent too, just wasn't a fan of the caliber, too expensive for what you got. I don't personally own a savage rimfire to compare to, but the ones I've seen have been decent. They should shoot just as nice, but the fit and finish on the 452 is definitely nicer.

I've got three CZ 452s. They aren't cheap feeling like the savages, really nice rifles. Both my .22s shoot 1-1.5" @ 100 yards. I feel I could probably improve on that with yodave's trigger kit, bedding, and a better rest (shooting from a bipod).

Cz!

Thanks for all the replys. I was at ProLine today and didn't they have a new CZ 455 Lux in stock in 22LR with the extra Barrel in 22Mag for a very reasonable price. They have more. Had to buy it. Its lovely. Nice trigger too. Smooth action. Sights. Bought the Redfield XH scope rings for it and some CCI 22mag ammo. Just need a scope now. Only trouble is snow today but hope to get out next week for some break in action.

Mikeystew is right, my shooting session with the above target was using iron sights. Don't underestimate the capability of these guns based on my shooting skills, the gun I believe is more capable than I! Also my eyes are not as good as a younger shooter, I'm 59....:p

I may have to go with a scope at some point, but never cared for them on small game.

Wow!

Put about 150 rounds through my new CZ 455 Lux22 at 50 meters today. Have a Tasco World Class Mil Dot 3x9x40 on it, a $70. big game rifle scope. Tried CCI Mini Mags 40gr solids. Flyers all over. Tried Federal Bulk, not bad at about 1 inch 5 shot groups. But the Winchester Power Point 40gr Hollow Points 3/4inch groups. Very happy. My pal who is a real accuracy buff said it would only get better as the barrel acclimatizes with more Power Points fired. No cleaning the barrel. Such a positive change from my 1022. He made me shoot his CZ 452 .17 at the same range. Holy crap 1/2 inch 5 shot group first time out. Still pumped!!!

When I bought my 452 Silhouette (blued/synthetic) 4 years ago, I was at the local sports shop, and had 2 Savages, heavy barrel stainless laminate thumbhole stock model and 1 other, the 452, and one other model all in front of me, all within $50 of each other, all bolt guns, and decent grades of rifle all, and I walked out with the CZ.Never a regret, three or four cases of Federals later, still in love...... and then I saw the heavy barreled varmint model- also super sweet with wood stock.the 453 with that trigger and finish level-also looks awesome.Just a great .22 design. I use a Tasco target/varmint 2.5 to 10 with mil dots and steel CZ rings.Cheap scope, but surprisingly good value for the money.

My CZ452 would average 3/8" for five shots at 50 yards, using SK Standard Plus. Yours could likely do as well with the right ammunition.

I've got an old BRNO .22 I bought about 30 years ago with the barrel cut to 16''.It's devastating even with a fixed 4X Bushnell

my mkII heavy barrel .22lr shoots like this at 25 yards - can do a little better with better ammo.
sorry about the sideways pic photobucket rotated it
25yards.jpg

it will shoot under .5" at 50 with cci std vel and down around .375 with perfect conditions and better ammo
