CZ Shadow - constant FTE

Hey John, did you shoot revolver at Provincials?

Yes. I Lost my front sight on the first stage but managed to get it back together.

OP-As far as the mods in th CZ Forum link go, they aren't actually tough at all. Very basic stuff.

Anyhow lots of good advice. Best bet is stick with ammo that works and shoot the hell out of it until you are more familiar with the gun.

Shoot and have fun.

John

Once again, use gun cleaner on extractor claw and under it, along with old toothbrush to scrub it...

That is my plan, last time I cleaned it I didn't even know what that part was to pay extra attention to it during cleaning. I'm pretty sure I do now.

Thanks,

Mark

I was also just wondering, if I do any of these modifications and it does not fix the problem, do I send it back to CZ? Or will they not work on it because I have modified it?

Thanks,

Mark

Where about are you? CRAFM is CZ center, call them.
But with SP-01 and SP-01 based pistols, break in is about 500rds.

I am in Calgary, AB, and I shoot at The Shooting Edge.

By the sounds of it I should wait until I have a few more hundred rounds through it before I get too alarmed then.

Thanks,

Mark

Funny I was getting the odd FTE for a bit (and every now and then) on my Shadow and determined it's my ferry limp wrists. I think I was afraid of holding too stiff and pulling the gun off target more as I generally shoot a semi-auto high/left.

My Browning Hi-Power is much more tolerant of my limp wristing than the Shadow.

I use to have lots and since I shorten my rounds all the FTE/FTF went away; I also changed the recoil spring for a 11# but I reload so for you a 13# should be perfect

Since it's commercial ammo, I'm curious of the OAL each one have for 147GR... do you have access to a caliper ?

I don't have access to a caliper but I was shooting Winchester Winclean 147gr 9mm. Does OAL vary from batch to batch of the same bullet? I'm not familiar with that sort of thing.

Thanks,

Mark

I meant the OAL of the Win vs the OAL of the AE

I am not sure what OAL means but I could not find that term on Winchester's website while looking at the specifications for the winclean.

I did, however, come across comments that the Winclean ammo is unusually long, and apparently the Shadow does not like long bullets.

At this point I'm optimistic that it's the ammo that is causing me problems, but we will see once I try some other brands.

Thanks,

Mark

OAL=overall length of the bullet, 115gr is shorter than 147gr for example

What do you guys use to polish the slide metal?

Well guys, I just picked up 1,200 rounds of BDX TMJ 124gr 9mm. I am headed to The Shooting Edge tonight and I will report back as to whether or not I have any FTE issues.

I predict flawless functioning.

OAL - OverAll Lenght of the round, not bullet.
Most rounds with 147gr bullets are longer than rounds with 115gr bullets ;)

Alright guys I am pleased to report near flawless functioning. Only one FTE in 150 rounds with the BDX TMJ 124gr. The back (Primer side) of the empty casing was pushed up against the bullet of the next round in the clip, and the rest of the empty casing was in the barrel. So basically the next round tried to feed but was stopped when it hit the back of the casing still in the barrel. It was early on in my shooting and didn't happen again. I love this ammo too by the way. For some reason I was shooting it way more accurately than I was the Winclean. Also, I don't get lead on my hands. The gun has seen about 350 rounds so far.

Secondly, I tried my new Uplula mag loader for the first time today and it's got to be one of the best inventions ever. I can load a clip in 15 sec now instead of 60 sec, and my thumbs don't get raw.

Also, I'm getting much better at stripping/cleaning the gun.

So, all in all I am extremely happy with everything, can't wait to head out again.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions,

Mark

Now, measure OAL on troublesome ammo and then on BDX, I bet BDX is shotrer.
Next round will most of the times shift forward in the mag on recoil, to reduce the movement and its effects I load my ammo shortish (even if it moves, there is still room to clear) and use extra strong mag springs that push the round against magazine lips harder thus limiting the movement as well.

Unfortunately I can't measure the Winclean because I will never buy that stuff ever again, and I used it all up the time I did buy it. Just from memory though, it seemed the BDX stuff was a little shorter, as it has a more rounded bullet than the Winclean which seemed longer with a truncated cone.

I'll be hitting the range again this weekend some time, and I am expecting the reliability to only improve as everything gets worked in a bit more. Extra strong mag springs seem like a good idea too.

Also, I noticed that the leading edge of the breach face (what was recommended to bevel to remedy FTE problems) is already beveled from the factory. Is the "fix" to simply bevel it further?

Thanks again for all your help, you are an amazing resource especially for CZ stuff.

i measured a 147 gr win winclean 9mm round at 1.112 coal this afternoon.
