Any one have problems with the CZ Shadow jamming? I have only put about a thousand rounds though it, and it is still new, that said I never had or have jamming problems with my SW M&P 40 or my Beretta M9. Any insight or tips would be appreciated!

A friend of mine had some stovepipe issues with some lousy ammo. he changed the recoil spring and it helped a bit, but was lousy for good ammo. I think some of these guns can be a little sensitive. I would try changing ammo brands before anything else.

might be the ammo

I had to try a few different bullet styles inorder to find one that feeds properly in my shadow. To check to see if it is the ammo. Remove your barrel and drop a cartridge in. The round should slide in and slide out.

Depends on jamming type, you may need to file slidestop tip where it contacts mag follower if it's jamming with longer (147gr) rounds/bullets. It's also a fact CZs like shorter rounds, I load mine at 1.08".

Cz

I had the same problem with mine. I bought it new in the summer and it would stove pipe rounds quite often. I found 2 things causing this, first when CZ's are new they are very 'tight', once broken in they get much better. Second make sure you have the proper hand grip on your handgun I cannot stress this enough if you have taken a black badge course or know someone who has that is the correct way to hold any handgun. It's not the ammo. I was at an IPSC match in September where our club photographer was taking pics, he showed me one and I instantly saw I had the wrong grip on my gun. Ever since then I have not had one stovepipe/jam and the Shadow shoots great.

CZ Jamming

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback. I took it into the gun store and changed the recoil spring to an 11lb spring. I will double check my grip, and see how it shoots with the new spring. The store told me that it will jam until broken in (and they did tell me this when I bought it), I guess time will tell. With luck the new spring will stop the stove pipe problem!

Cheers to all and happy holidays!

Check the lips on the mags, if they are flared a bit too much the next round coming up might be knocking the empties off the extractor during the ejection cycle.

CZ now sells modified slidestops, so, it'll be within factory specs and should not throw you out of Production.

I'd still recommend filing the original since the new one is shorter, you'd need to reach further with your thumb to release slide, compared to regular SP-01 guns'.

Agreed. Still haven't heard what kind of jam we are discussing, but if it's a feed or extraction problem this is where I would look first before filing anything on the slide stop. Too much flare on the lips can result in early release so the round can't break-over and rotate up under the extractor correctly, and the gun will jam. And as noted in the above post, this can also affect extraction/ejection. after checking this you still feel it could be the slide stop, check this by first removing the whole top end and then insert a loaded mag into the frame so you can visually confirm if you are getting round contact on the slide stop or not. If not, don't cut it.

Do a search for oal as well for these guns, Most guns have their preferences when it comes to bullet profile and load length, and CZ's are no different.

I troubleshooting, always eliminate one issue at a time so as not to muddy the water as you work your way through this.

Extraction

The problem is extraction (stove pipe), we will see if the lighter recoil spring works. If not, I have plenty of suggestions and techniques to resolve the issue, (thanks to everyones feedback!)

I use to get lots of stovepipes with my Shadow with handloads that would shoot just fine through an M&P... definitely a spring issue.

The Shadow comes with a 15# spring, which is just a tiny bit weaker than the standard CZ-75 16# spring (hence the "weakened recoil spring" advertized on their website and such as a feature of the pistol). The 75 is a military pistol designed to fire hot military rounds. You put a round even a little weaker than a factory round through it and you'll note that the casings barely spit out and will sometimes not clear the slide before it slaps forward and stovepipes.

When shooting for practice with full power reloads, I use a 15# spring (the standard one). When shooting weaker competition reloads for practice, I use a 13# spring and when shooting competition reloads in competition where I really don't wanna risk a failure, I use a 11# spring.

I've never had a failure to load with mine, or a double feed that wasn't due to the stovepipe.

I've been using TMJ Wolf Bullets through my Shadow. No stovepipes, but I thought I'd try a bit of a torture test one day and was rapid firing as quickly as safely possible (with my two mags reloading - really need some more mags!). Eventually after about 150 rounds, I would get the odd failure to feed because the feed ramp was so gunked up. I disassembled and cleaned off the ramp with a piece of the ammo cardboard box and fired another couple boxes through without a problem.

I'm not sure how many most folks fire though before any cleaning or it affecting the cycling. I don't usually just fire through so many but thought it might be interesting to see if I'd get a problem. Guess I saw. At least I always clean it after a range session.
