CZ SP-01 Shadow vs CZ Shadow 2 or another 9mm? Noobie :S

So sorry for the delay…I must've not set it to notify me when I get responses!

I'm not loaded by any stretch and even the SP-01 shadow would be a splurge... the Shadow 2 (or even a tagfolio ) would just be more so.... and although I like new and shiny things... I appreciate best bang for buck more... especially since I still need to learn to reload 😳

I do not have the largest hands for a tall guy and am just getting into pistol shooting. I held many and the IWI Jericho and Shadow 1.....any CZ...felt the best and liked the trigger on th
I actually got to try the Jericho Baby Eagle just this weekend. Really wanted to love it because it felt solid in my hands… but it wasn't as accurate as the.38 or other 9mm I was trying. I also got to try a “regular” and a modded out/ outfitted CZ Czechmate (sp?) a member was kind enough to let me try… absolutely loved the kitted put Czechmate but dang I can't drop the 5-7k the member has dropped on it… even the “regular” was nice but again.. so expensive!

Go try a Grand Power X-Calibur if you can.
thanks VanMan, I haven't heard of this before but decreasing recoil is definitely key for me. I'll add the Grand Power to my list to research.

Suggest you shoot both Shadow and Shadow 2 side by side and then make the call...If you're shooting out of Target Sports in Gormley PM me if you're interested in shooting each before you buy. PS. You're gonna luv IPSC!
I would get the shadow 2. The extra weight would help you control the muzzle flip more. It also has a longer sight radius which would help in accuracy. Both shadows you can flip the mag release to the right side if you wish although I'm also a lefty and I'm so used to using my trigger finger for the mag release I haven't changed it in my shadow 2.
My club is in Burlington. If you want you can come out to our ipsc night on Tuesday and try my shadow 2.

Ooh that is so amazing to both Northaways and Carsmovies!
I live Oakville/ Mississauga border and belong to the WSSC range in Hamilton… I actually am on wait list for Burlington though as you know carsmovies… the wait is… daunting. I think the email notifying me I'm on the wait list for the safety class actually said 34-36 months :bangHead:

If it's not too much of an inconvenience, I would love to try the Shadow 2 with Carsmovie or both with Northaways! I can bring my own ammo and a case of your choice beverage as a token of my appreciation!

To the OP, check to make sure you can comfortably and properly reach the trigger for the double action trigger pull with a proper and consistent grip. Pointing this out because you said you are intending to shoot in production division.
I sadly haven't had the chance to take the Black Badge course… I've contacted the Black Badge coordinator from the ONT-IPSC site, just waiting to hear back when the Soonest course in the GTA will be offered. I actually had to look up what the term meant! I will try it and make sure! Thank you for pointing this out!

As a newbie the honest truth is that it will be quite a while before you will be better than what a stock Shadow with a trigger job will be. When smoothed up and set for a DA pull that is just a touch over the minimum 5lbs the gun is a total delight to shoot. The design of the older Shadow already has a fair amount of mass up front thanks to the dust cover.

So I would suggest that the added options found on the Shadow 2 are more of a matter of "gilding the lily". And that these are mostly options you can look at for later on. In the meantime as you're suggesting the extra $500 can go a long way towards buying the magazines and belt rig you also need.

A little hint on accuracy of the gun. There was a brief time that around here cast lead bullets were a significant amount cheaper than jacketed. I bought a box of 500 to try and found that my Shadow really tightened up it's slower paced bullseye shooting ability. And I'm talking about a mag of cast then a mag of jacketed side by side so it wasn't just me having a good day. But for IPSC shooting? It's nothing you'd see in real terms. We're talking an accuracy gain you'll only see when shooting seriously for bullseye accuracy at a slower pace. But it's there as an option if you want to try. It also suggests that you would need to get a reloading rig since it's tough or impossible to find cast 9mm ammo.

Best of luck with the new sport. It's nice to see more of the ladies come out to play.

Open lead bullets is not a good idea even if you reload since a lot of indoor clubs in Ontario are now banning them for health reasons of course. Besides plated bullets are not that much more these days.

I went with a Cz custom shop sp-01 shadow. I spent 1340$ USD on it, and well I'm extremely happy with it. So much so that I was first in production at my match yesterday, first match with it and I was 200 points ahead of the closest production shooter.

OK, "valid where not prohibited" :d

It's there if the rules allow it. Or to try on an outdoor range.

Having had the opportunity to shoot jacketed, plated and cast it has been my observation that for the most part cast does close up the groupings on a lot of guns if the shooter is good enough already to generate neat tidy groups. This applies to my semi autos as well as my revolvers.

I offered it as an option for outdoor shooting or for any times where open lead bullets are not banned.

Thanks for that! I read a few comments back the whole it'll cost me more in the long run :S you're probably correct that I won't be anywhere near the level of even the Shadow 1... someone suggested that since I'm really new to the bigger calibre to try 1911 because of the double action vs single action?

any thoughts on this?

The double action trigger is only there for the first shot. It's single action all following shots. Having said that though the 1911 in 9mm is the sweetest shooting 9mm I've found. I shoot an Infinity single stack 9mm 1911 in classic division. I do also have the shadow 2 though for those times I feel like shooting production again.

If your mitts are small you may find both the Shadow or Shadow2 quite big. I suggest you consider the aforementioned PPQ, or jump the shark and look at 1911s. The grips on the 1911s are much smaller as they are single-stack mags.

You should see if there is a range nearby where you can try different pistols if your hands are as small as you think.

Good luck!

I've got small hands (size medium in pig alpha gloves) yet my cz shadow fits perfectly. Probably has to do with the slim aluminum grips from czc tho.

that does look nice! Still too much of a noob the only 1911s I know are of the "big brands" and Ive only shot the Iver Johnson though. (This is probably going to sound bad but I don't remember a difference between shooting the CZ and the Iver (except that the Iver was more accurate)

Thank you! Carsmovies is kind enough to let me test the Shadow 2... from what I recall...for the brief moment I held both, the SP-01 fit my hand better...

Don't have shooting gloves yet...but my snowboard gloves and/or my leather motorcycle gloves were size small ladies? the XS leather gloves fit... but I like the little space the Small size gave me... remind me again...are gloves mandatory for IPSC?

No, I wear gloves for rifles only when weather is cold or wet. I don't shoot pistols with gloves. Well I did today, but it was like -6 with wind chill, wind was gusting around 30 mph.
