I have a feeling i already know the answer to this question but asking gets answers.
planning to build a hunter class small bore silhouette rifle. advised cz457 is one of the better "off the shelf" actions and system for a budget friendly setup. any opinions on any alternative in that sub 800 $ range?
rifle will double as a gopher gun so don't mind spending a bit, but not AZ $$

Doesn't have to be a 457. Could go with a 455, or if you find a nice one a 452, or even rarer the 453 with it's set trigger. But Cz is kind of the big one in this price range. You could look into Savage rifles, they have a large variety of rimfires made right here in Canada that would probably work fine for Hunter class small bore silhouette rifle matches. Mark II, 93, maybe the B22 would be allowed but I'm not sure. The savage's would also be cheaper then a CZ.

I have a 452 American and was looking at the T1X until I handled one - it's a lot of money just to throw away the stock...
Ended up getting another CZ, a 457 Varmint HB.

I’ve got a T1X. The only advantage I see with a CZ is the ease of barrel changes. Often aftermarket barrels on T1X can have feeding issues, especially for the last rnd in a mag. I run mine carefully to avoid this.

I have a T1x I built up for long range 22LR - chassis, new barrel, etc etc etc
Tikka T1x mags are horrible things. The mags I'm out of luck with (out of 5 I have, 2 have a lot of fail to feed properly first round).
Other than that and the straight bolt handle it is an excellent rifle. I wound up getting a Sterk bolt handle for $$$ and a 6 month wait.

I shoot 2 x CZ hunting, 1 x 455 in 22LR, the other 455 in 17HMR. They never miss a beat, and mags in either plastic or metal work great.

If I were to build another rifle up it would be a 457 for the bolt handle and mags. Chassis systems etc are available for the 455/457 just like the T1x

Bought a t1x and cz 457 synthetic at the same time. Ended up keeping the cz. It was a little more accurate, stock was better and all around a bit smoother to operate. Liked it so much that purchased another to strip for a prs build.

I have a 455 in .17 hmr, plan to buy another 455 in .22lr . The synthetic stock on the cz IS WAY more comfortable. I have a 557 synthetic also.. also incredibly comfortable.

you read my mind

Have been very pleased with CZ 452 Varmint over the years with lots of lead sent downrange. Got it long enough ago to remember that I did a fair bit of comparison shopping at the time and for price and features it was the best choice for me.

I'm shooting high AA into AAA scores with my T1X in the factory stock with upright grip and DIY comb.

It's a good rifle although the barrel is on the shorter and lighter side.

How handy are you with DIY?

For a BUDGET option. Hard to beat a Savage mk II with the heavy barrel. I purchased mine as my first bolt action 22. Enjoyed it and decided to upgrade and got myself a CZ457 Canadian. Also an awesome rifle but that savage is still a better shooter (I’m sure the heavy barrel and better trigger has a lot to do with that).

But going with the savage is a lot cheaper allowing more $$ for the scope.

You have just asked the Chevy vs Ford question. My vote is for the Tikka. I have 2 of them - a 16 inch and the other a 20 inch. Both are extremely accurate and the bolt is very smooth. I have shot numerous 455,457 and for me the Tikka just felt better.

I would also add the Savage MKII to the list. The triggers can be adjusted to quite a light pull. Actions will slick up and basic function issues (if present) are straight forward to deal with.

Barrels tend to be accurate as well.

Another option that may not qualify due to stock shape(???) is the Scorpio EM322A. This is an Annie clone and the many we have, shoot surprisingly well. They typically need some TLC but once tuned up, can compete with the mega dollar 700 type rifles.

PS.. I have competed with Bruno #4s (you can use a sporter contour if necessary) and Mossbergs back in the day... so more options to consider.

Keep in mind the OP is looking for a Hunter Silhouette rifle.
So the stock can't be thumbhole and the barrel must taper. A high comb stock is ideal.

There is a Scorpio in the EE with a custom stock that would be a very good start.

Yeah! Go buy that :p

If someone is so inclined, please dm me about these silhouette stocks. I'm ignorant to the rules and setup, but easily and happily could fill in the niche of custom stocks for that. I LIKE high combs!

Holy crap, lots of replies that was unexpected. Appreciate the input, i will take a look into some of the other makes and models listed, shoulder a few of them.
and yeah as grantmac said. fairly specific rules for hunter class. I am quite confident in general DIY, mechanic by trade and prefer to do anything myself as to learn a new skill. firearm modification is a completely new field for me.
I am super green in the firearm world, hence pretty basic questions.

While I am not into PRS nor long range target shooting, I'll share what I have - 9 455's, all bone stock, wood stocks, 8 have Leupold scopes, 1 oddball; 3 457's, all bone stock. I use them all at various times for gopher shooting. I also have a 452 FS which currently doesn't have a scope.

The 457's are smooth smooth actions. The 457 .22WMR has a long barrel, approx. 24", which is a bit long for my liking, but I'll struggle long with it.

I sold both of my 24" WMR barrels w/ manual sights and bot 20'' 455 smooth barrels to replace. I personally don't like the look of manual sights and a scope on a rimfire, or a center-fire for that matter.

In case anyone was curious. I did end up with a 457, preferred the stock and action felt good. saved a couple bucks on the cz for glass. didn't completely avoid tikka as also picked up a t3x lite in 6.5 prc at the same time ha.
