This is the story of how I broke my rifle while installing trigger shims and springs on a CZ452. Crap. :(

I have a cz452 silhouette (blued action and barrel, plastic stock) and love it. Its a fun little .22. The trigger was not bad, but I read a few accounts of how great the Eric Brook's trigger kits are - and they're only $15... What could go wrong?

The kit includes four shim tubes to take up trigger creep, and 4 springs to reduce trigger weight. Supposedly, you can swap them in to make a nice light crisp trigger. OK simple. Lets rock!

I start with the thickest shim, and put in the lightest spring. Hey, if its safe, I'll go with it. On reassembly, the trigger doesn't seem to work at all. WTF? I see it no longer engages, and the firing pin drops on bolt closure. No big deal, next shim, more springs, I'll find a good combo....

I move through the next shims, heavier springs and things get better and better.

I get the trigger to engage, but then it goes off when I close the bolt hard. Thinner shim, heavier spring...
I get the bolt to close, but then the trigger goes off when I tap the butt of the stock. Thinner shim, heavier spring...
I get the trigger to hold when I tap the butt, but a conk on the floor and it goes off every time. Thinner shim, heavier spring...

Finally, the thinnest shim and the heaviest (2 - 2.5 lb ) spring seems like a good combination. Trigger feels great, action seems safe. My hand is sore from bumping the gun to try and make it go off. I conk it on the floor and it doesn't go off. It really seems safe.

So how safe is safe enough? I ask myself what I can live with. I want the gun to be fun, but the thought of an injury due to accidental discharge make me ill. I'd like to shoot this gun with my son one day. I don't really like conking the butt of my gun on the floor, but its got a squishy rubber pad on the end, and pretty well everything else on the rifle is made of steel.

OK - Ten conks on the floor and we'll call it safe.

Bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, click.

The trigger goes off with conk ten, oh and hey look a giant crack in the stock just behind the receiver tang. Crap.

Just then my wife come in and says: "Hey Hun, do you want some ice cream cake?"

I want some frikken' ice cream cake!

The worst part is there was really nothing wrong with the gun when I started.

I'm not sure what the moral of this story is, but it seemed like something which should be posted on CGN. I'll take pictures if this thread generates any interest...

:(

BTW: In this story a "conk" on the floor is me holding the gun by the barrel vertically, and dropping it on its butt about 12"...

See carnage on page 2...

If you were dropping the gun onto a hard surface such as concrete from a height of 12", I am not surprised the stock cracked.

When I do a drop test it is generally from about a height of four to five inches onto a carpeted areaI.

If you can spread the crack enough to inject some epoxy or cyanacrylic adhesive, this should result in an effective repair.:)

Moral of the story is.... guns aren't made to conk on the floor:D
J/K, sounds like you now have an excuse to get a new stock!!!

KDX - Yeah, my wife has good timing.

Rod - The floor was concrete with a 1/2" rubbery foam pad on top (to keep my feet warm.) I wasn't about to go easy on the rifle during a safety test, but clearly my conks were too much.

"cyanacrylic adhesive" - What's that? Where do I get it?

I checked out the "Richard's Microfit" stocks while eating my ice cream last night. They look pretty nice. I'll bet I could get a take off stock from someone who's bought a Richard's.

I dunno. The stock really was the worst part of the gun....

Wow dude that sucks!
Fix that puppy up and go shoot it!
And for god's sake, please, no more conks!

I can't vouch for the platic stock as I have a wood varmint, but everything in that rifle is build like a tank.

Good luck Bob!

"cyanacrylic adhesive" = Crazy glue, works really well on plastic and it is actually "cyanoacrylate super glue" Best source is your local hobby shop and buy the thin if you want to wick it into a crack.

ps, I hope thats some good K-Town bud in that thing you're lighting in your avatar, lol

Thanks for the info on the glue, and thanks for going easy on me guys.

So what's the best way to test a stock repair?

Conking? (JK)

from one CDNnut to another. I have a CZ 452 Varmint stock (wood) that I will have available in the near future. Cheap...................... It will just sit collecting dust. It is pillar bedded. can easily be skim bedded to fit your action.

I will not be using it after I get the new BR stock under it.

Just search the rimfire section for cz452 benchgun build.

What's a BR stock?

What are good after market stocks for the CZ? I actually like the non-wood stuff better but will look at both.

Hope this is not considered a hijack, in the end you are going to get a new stock ;) so lets turn this thread into - replacement stocks or the CZ - bonk proof.:D

This is what

I am getting. It is a 3" wide Benchrest stock. He also makes sporter models with a narrower fore end.

there is also a pretty cool synthetic (read fiberglass) stock available from some outfit in Australia that looks awesome and has a 50 round ammo storage compartment in the stock
if i "conk" any of my CZ/BRNO stocks that's what i will be getting for sure, now if someone could come on and remember the name for me....?

Conked out stock....

cycbb486 - If you have a stock to sell, clearly I'm in the market for one.

For you all you "can't look away from a car wreck" types, here's the requested carnage.
