Never owned an HMR but seriously looking at a CZ 542. Nice looking rifle with classic lines. Priced not too bad as well. What are your sentiments?

I'm thinking you mean the 452 as in the title. If correct, I have one in plain .22LR Heavy Barrel. Fine, fine firearm. Very accurate, reliable, never fails and the nicest thing of all is that it fits and feels like a real gun, not a cheap little .22 like others do. I'm sure you'll like one too.
I wouldn't hestitate to buy one. I have a 452 American, and while there are slight differences, both are great shooting guns with a quality look and feel. Aside from the barrel length and profile, the varmint has a lug through the stock into the barrel, and different ring groove. You may want to do a little polishing of some bolt components and lighten the trigger, these can all be done for nothing at home. There is a lot of good information at Rimfire central on these rifles.

Actually, most of the 17 HMR's even in the varmint have the 3/8" same as the Americans.
I have a CZ452 and a CZ527 in 223. EXCELLENT guns and the shop I got mine in-everybody there owns a 452 or 453. They are very accurate guns and occupy what I think of as the "sweet spot" in that to get anything better you have to come up with much more bread. Boring in that they are accurate and reliable. Beautifully made rifles no matter what you buy. Had the 223 bedded and am working up loads for it to see what I can do with it. Love the set trigger. No plastic either and easy to get lefties. Oddly the 452 and 527 weigh in at the same.
