I've got a CZ455 Varmint with the thumb hole stock on the way. Any suggestions for glass to throw on it? I plan on using it to pick heads off of partridge, rabbits and maybe take opportunity shots at coyotes. as for budget, I'd be happy to stay under 500$.

Did you order ring and bases too? They arent the easiest to find sometimes FYI. Just ordered some talleys from Prophet River.
I had a nikon rimfire ebr on mine, but found the 9x power wasnt quite enough to reach out and smack gophers at the 150ish mark. Especially if you could only see part of the gopher. Maybe its my eyes. So the 3-9 went on the .22. The gun will do it though.
I would get something 12-16 power w parallax. Nikon has been growing on me lately, Reliable has a Nikon sale on right now. Good glass for the price, though I haven't really beat mine up to test its ruggedness. You will love that 455! Except the triggers leave a bit to be desired...

I've heard good things about the Nikons and was going to look into the 3-12 or 4-16 models. The M223 has a few features I like. Ideally the scope I choose would be FFP and Mil/Mil but I know I'm asking a lot for this price range.
I haven't looked at rings yet because I haven't picked a scope yet, it will depend on tube diameter as well as objective diameter. The whole reason I wanted to try the 17HMR was because it shoots flatter than a .22lr so I would like the scope to be as close to the barrels as possible.
If you are going to hunt partridge with it as well as shoot longer distances, you ought to consider a scope with adjustable objective (AO) or Side Focus (SF) to allow you to focus at shorter distances as well as longer ones.
I would look at the Vortex line as well. They make some very nice scopes. I have a Burris 3x9x40 on my 455 (22lr) and I'm happy with it. On my 527 in 17Hornet I put a Leupold 4x12x40 on. Haven't had a chance to try that one out yet though. I only got the Leupold as it is one of the few with a narrow eye piece rather than the monstrosities that the other brands come with.TC

The scope that's grown on me the most on my .17's is a Bushnell 3200 4-12x40. I like the DOA 600 reticle, it has a nice fine crosshair. Well under your max price point, AO, good optics, good warranty. Pretty much the perfect mag range for a .17 rimfire. A 3200 in 5-15x40 would work well too.
Have a couple Nikons on my rifles, I like them very much as well. My 452 currently wears a cheap Bushnell XLT 4-12x40 with the DOA reticle. It works really well, got the hash-marks figured out for distance with a .22, and is cheap. The glass doesn't look too bad either, but when I've got it and another rifle out at the same time you can tell it's cheaper glass when switching between the two.
I have a Prostaff5 3.5-14x50 on my 527 .17 Hornet and I love that scope. If I had to recommend a scope under $500 it would be a Prostaff5.
