CZ455 Varmint vs Ruger SR22 range report (pic heavy)

Was curious how my 455 and SR22 would stack up against each other. I was pretty sure I knew which one would win but what a great excuse (like I need one) to head to the range. So...off to the SPFG range....

Ammuntion used:
Federal Bulk Pack
American Eagle
Blazer
CCI Mini Mags (thought I had more with me than I did. That's why there's only 5 shots taken instead of 10)
Ely Target (the unlabelled pics as I didn't know what Phoenix would have before I left the house)

Shot at 25 and 50 yards. High 20 degrees and not a breath of wind.

Top targets are the SR22 and the bottom ones are the 455.

What was the sighting system on each rifle? And yeah, 455 won. This is kinda discouraging though as I just traded a pretty accurate gun for an SR-22.
 
linzeiisdad - nice to see 10 shot groups with different types of ammo. Looks like both are shooting well. Try rimfiresports if want some performance parts for the SR 10/22 - helped mine a fair bit.

mikeystew - Hear you on the Marlin 60 - extremely underrated. See if you can find a T/C R55 and wont miss any prior semi auto .22.

Bushnell Banners on both, 4x12x40AO on the SR, 4x16x40AO on the 455.

Thanks, I'm getting a McGowen barrel (factory profile) from Mystic and I'm still undecided on the trigger. As is it's still a fun gun to shoot.

Good choice! seriously, i never in my wildest dreams would have imagined the SR-22 shot that bad. my $60 warped cooey shoots better than that with iron sights. Heck, the rugers' 50 yard groups with a 12x scope look like my papooses' 100m groups with a 4x scope :eek:
I guess thats the price you have to pay to look tacticool...???
 
I've had (or used) several 10/22's, and those results are pretty typical. And they're not BAD results on an absolute scale. But relative to bolt guns, or high end semis, it's not great.

You can spend a lot of money chasing better groups with a 10/22. It's just not a precision gun. Putting a match barrel on is probably the biggest bang for your buck, and it will make a big improvement, but even so, the 10/22 action itself isn't exactly a low-tolerance tight-fitting precision action.

I suggest that if you're looking for precision results, a 10/22 is never going to satisfy.
 
Nice shooting with the CZ, but I think it is unfair to put a SR22 Semi against a Bolt Action

:D :p

A better barrel and some tweaking to the trigger set up, you can probably tighten up the SR's performance, but like it was said, it's not a precision rifle ;)
 
Thanks linzeiisdad, this thread came along at just the right time... Im calling off the trade. Im not giving up an awesome semi for an awesome "looking" semi, even if it is "worth" twice the money. Just being semi auto does not forgive that kind of "patterning" in my book.
Sorry Wham-O, I guess you wont get to bust my nutz for owning a ruger after all..

I'd like to see the groups that the Marlin shoots compaired to the SR-22. I doubt it will be as far off as the OP's compairison to the CZ. The SR-22 was not designed to be a tack driving target rifle, so PLEASE take it for what it is, a rifle designed to mimic the AR, take AR parts and be highly customizable. You don't want an AR styled rifle, then stick to the Marlin, which IMHO is a great, accurate hunting rifle, for a guy that only wants to shoot it. The SR or 10/22 in general is for the guys that want to spend hours sourcing parts, hours tinkering, hours tuning and hours making it "HIS OWN" rifle. I once owned a Marlin Model 60, don't regret selling it one bit, I currently have 7 10/22's. I would be in the latter group, as would be your friend Wham-O. :D
 
Try Lapua Super Club in the SR22. With the Ruger target models it turns them into a different rifle.

If you want to shoot the cheap stuff out of the Ruger with any accuracy you'll need to get an aftermarket barrel. The Dlaks ones seem to shoot the American Eagle 38 grain stuff really well.

If i had an SR i would be happy to oblige. But i'll try and get out to the range and put a few on paper for the doubters, along with some groups from my cooeys, and the papoose takedown. All are tackdrivers, and i doubt the cooeys are far off from the CZ accuracy wise, they however dont wear scopes. The only scoped gun i have is the Papoose at the moment.

That's my plan for another outing, gather up some high end target ammo, RWS, Lapua and Wolf if I can find it. I certainly wasn't impressed with the Eley, IMO opinion the Federal Bulk Pak shot just as well or better.
 
actually the semi did quite well ! i'm surprised... very good to see

Really?, because last time I competed in a 50m opensight benchrest match my cooey shot groups nearly equal to the CZ's in the first post, which was wearing a 4-16x scope. Only I shot my groups with iron sights. I also outshot a BSA martini 12/15 that day, actually it was only 2 of us shooting because our club is having issues. Based on this i don't believe you.

Both groups are 10 shots at 50m using CCI standard velocity. These were my best targets of the day, and all of them scored in the 90's. Here's a link to the results; (it was actually a cooey 78 with rear peep sight and front blade, not a 75)

Here's my results from when I used the stock marlin 60, unfortunately I couldn't find the old targets but you'll see i shot a 93/100 for rapid timed (i shoot better quickly)... let me see a stock 10/22 do that;

Don't get me wrong.... I'm not a doubter, I owned a model 60, I know they can shoot..... just not like the CZ. :D
