Hey guys-I commented in a thread this morning re: the pros/cons of interchangeable barrels for the CZ457 platform...but it reminded me that I once considered dropping a 17M2 barrel on a CZ. As a longtime 452 fan, I sure resisted the 457s but have owned a 457 Scout for a while, it sits in a 457 American stock. Nice little rig.

While I suspect this idea will die in the quoting stage...I DO wonder what a 17M2 barrel, CZ 457 American-like taper, would cost if it's even available? The first though was whether or not I could get a shorter, scout-like length but then I'd be leaving some velocity on the table. Maybe?

I think $500 Canadian would be my ceiling, and I'd be reluctant at that. Even if I decided to dry-dock this for another year or two...I'd love to know where you guys would order, what I'd expect to pay, lead time, etc.

thanks!

Lilja - note pricing for a 455 drop in 2 years ago was $475 USD

I'm thinking your price point it a bit low since a Canadian made drop in by IBI in 22LR is $560CAD

With any manufacturer, the drop in would be the most cost effective. Any further customization adds $$

You could watch the EE closely, for a couple of different options... 1st would be a 455 or 457 barrel in 17hm2, although rare, a couple have come up for sale over the years, but I can't remember if they were factory or after market barrels. 2nd (and maybe easier?), they did make 452s in 17hm2, they even produced them in a left handed version (never seen a lefty in person, always wanted one though). They come up for sale from time to time, I've seen them sell for just under $1,000 to well over $1,000.

Last option (and maybe the closest to your $500 budget?), find a factory 22lr barrel, pay a gun smith to sleeve it, chamber it and head space it.

I'm not really sure if any of those options would fall into your max budget, but those are about the only options I can come up with. I have owned a couple 17hm2 on the savage mark II actions, they all shot well enough for what I needed. But with Eley no longer producing high quality 17hm2 ammo, I'm not too sure what all you can expect.

My crew went through this last year. They wanted a 17hm2 in a 457.
Some ordered the Lothar pre-fit barrel.
The other option is to start with a 22lr donor barrel, and a gunsmith converts it to 17hm2 with a insert in the barrel.

I enjoyed the 17mach2, and it was cheaper to shoot than the 17hmr, when I was buying the Eley loads for $6-7 per box. But when ammunition started to dry up, I sold my Cooper rifle, and my remaining 15k or so of Eley loads and bought a 17hmr to replace it. I sold everything for enough to have pretty much shot my 17mach2 for free for several years. I wouldn't be spending a lot to buy a 17mach2 now, with ammunition being expensive and not easy to find.
