Hi there..

You know a range trip is SORELY needed when someone starts asking this stuff..

I was fiddling with my 858, and theorized that it would function fine with the top foregrip section taken off..
it doesn't seem to be integral to the function of the rifle.. aside from protecting one's hand from gas..

Can one do this, and if one did, would one then be awesome for trying something so neat?...

... I need a range trip..

yup!! you need to get some shooting time and make it fast, cos that is one lame idea.

without the top HG , the gas rod can easily fly out and give your fingers a bloody manicure.:D

There is absolutely no wear on my top hand guards. I don't know what you guys are talking about with this "guides the rod" business. That said, I still wouldn't fire the gun without the cover on. Sounds like a nasty accident waiting to happen.

Been there. Even with the top held on with a bolt and nut it kept rattling loose and lost POI with the red dot. Took the cover off to shoot iron sites and the piston+spring launched out into a nearby puddle.

It doesn't work.

CZ was design to wear on the gas block on 2 sides and the bottom where the rod's head is positioned, the top Hg will act as a guide should something failed like a weak spring , however due to the thin sheet metal it wont take alot of wear.

you will notice there is a bump (1" oblong) on the inside the top HG, that is what holds the rod down when need be, also you will notice the top HG locking pin also act as a rod hold down when the locking pin is in place, just look thru the side where the locking pin goes.

quite a nice design compared to the SKS which uses a heavier tube for the rod.

I discovered my VZ58 is like any other VZ58, the upper part of the HG and the pin realy guide the rod.

I must be funny when the rods goes flying
