friend bought this autoloader almost 20 years ago and never fired it. Receipt describes it as a 52-57. Gun appears to us it could be unfired. He asked me what it's worth. Do you know the one I mean? Bayonet folds tight against side. Thanks for comment

Depends on condition.
Check barrel and annular piston movement under the handguard.
Pull the breech back with an empty mag in place, this will lock the bolt to the rear.
Pinch the ears on each side of the upper handguard and pivot it slightly upward while tugging to the rear once disengaged. This will free it from its forward attaching point and allow you to remove it.
Now, grasp the small annular part situated behind the locknut and try to slide it to the rear.
It should move freely against spring pressure and snap back completely if released.
Check for rust and seizing at this place.
If it is clean, you're a lucky dog.
These rifles come and go from $250 to $700.00 + depending on their state of use/neglect and whether they still have all their parts INCLUDING the mag, which is supposed to be loaded with five-shot stripper clips, BTW.
Correct mags are VERY expensive these days and certain parts are few and far between.
Personally, I think $450.00 should be the upper limit for a good condition one but it's just me and I'll never again sell ANY of my VZs...
PP. :)

They are pretty neat rifles. Others have posted realistic prices; I've seen them go for as little as $250 for an unissued one, and there are some greedypusses on the EE who have tried to sell them for over $700.
