Czech Aero L-39 Albatros Jet?

There were two at the Boundary Bay Airshow this year, so they were probably a safe bet to show up at Abbotsford.

They did a formation take-off and the second jet caught a load of dirty air from the first about 20 feet up. Looked like a rear sphincter-clincher as it wobbled all over the place with gear and flaps still down.

Saw one about a week ago. Kind of cool with the Red Stars on the wing bottoms as it flew by.

How many are privately owned in Canada? US?

With the Air Shows going on the last while, there's probably a few flying around. What do they usually charge for a ride?

Were there any at Abbotsford this year?

Probably this one from JetPro. Saw it at the Watskiwin Airshow a few weeks back. They weren't offering any rides at the show but they do charity/fund raiser rides at a premium.

Pretty sure it was an Albatros that went down near Juneau a couple of years back. If memory serves me the pilot ejected, but didn't have the altitude for seat separation and parachute deployment.

Thought it was illegal to import military aircraft into the states?

Grizz

The number of ex-WP warbirds would seem to indicate otherwise. I seem to recall some MiG-21s in the US too.

I talked to the owner of a (the only?) civilian-registered CT-114 Tutor at the Boundary Bay airshow, and he mentioned that part of the civilianization process included removing ejection seats, and that the same had to be done for the Vampire he had before.

Actually, they offered to sell us a bunch of L-159 a few years back, they could replace them, but it wouldn't be Canadian built, not that much is nowadays

While the L-39 is very fighter looking, it is a jet trainer. It has no sweep to the wings, they are just tapered. ###y, yes, but not much faster than the Tutor. There are two based near where I live and the owner has let me photograph them. One thing I noticed was that they were registered in the U.S. The had N number registrations. They are both gloss black with red stars (and U.S. Numbers).
Red.
