Here’s a set of ebony grips I made for a 1911 I have.

Nice, those are great. I’ve been thinking of making a set of wood grips for my Ruger Wrangler, just haven’t figured out what type of wood to use yet. I have some walnut, cherry, poplar for hardwood pieces that might work as well as some nice tight grain fir or some birch I could cut down and slab.
Cherry would be pretty cool. I'll take a set with pesos inset into them for my Vaquero......
Those who are mildly adventurous and crafty can easily make various kind of scales, or knife supply companies can generally accommodate with a number of materials. However, your time is your money. Making them is often not cheaper but obviously custom to your desires. For rare firearms, it may be desirable.
When I’m working my time is money, when I’m in the shop making something for myself or tinkering on a gun my time is strictly pleasure. Buying something that everyone else can own can’t replace the satisfaction of making a one off for myself, time is just part of the equation.
