DA 50BMG Range Report

Hey gatehouse....off thread topic,but i see your statement about the .375 Ruger .Just wondering why you think its the most successful .375?The 378 Weatherby would Bi...h slap it, but I'm assuming you have other criteria than straight power/velocity.......just curious

Rifles chambered in The 378 WBY have never been popular. Unlike the Ruger. The Ruger is the perfect balance of power, velocity and rifle options.

If rifles in 375 Ruger were available like 300WM it would sell great. The corporate stores don't carry them, the Savage/Mossberg/Howa chambered ones are rarely in stock anywhere in Canada. It's a very flexible cartridge like the H&H, but shorter (fits in more actions). I have both. I will probably keep the nicest rifle. That means the CZ in 375H&H, rather than the Mossberg. 2X the purchase cost though. The Mossberg is light; without a scope top loads would be lively.
 
That is some genuine badassery right there. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford one of those babies. RESPECT.

If you have a job, you can afford anything- if you want to. Put a bit aside every payday.

And, while I am not normally an advocate of sharing anything, a 50BMG rifle would be a great opportunity for a few buddies to go in on to purchase.
 
CanAm only had the one in stock when I bought, so if it had been a 26" I would have bought that one. I don't know if that is a good answer, though. :)

Looking at it-

If I was interested in portability I would look at the 26" because maybe I could fit the whole rifle in a case, whereas right now I take it apart to travel. I'm never going to sling this rifle and hike up a mountain though.

32" should give you a bit more velocity, but probably not as much difference as if it was a smaller bore and shorter barrels. 26" should give adequate velocity in a 50BMG

Shorter barrels are often stiffer, which in theory = better accuracy. But the rifle is plenty accurate for me.

32" looks very badass. Everyone that sees it drops their jaw. The 26" one I'm sure would have similar effect but the 32" looks closer to artillery than a rifle. :)

To sum it up, I wouldn't shy away from either one of them and if I wanted something shorter, would have no reservation with going to a 26" barrel. It's up to the individual to decide if that's important for himself.

I'll admit I like the look of the 26" barrel better, BUT the optimal length of barrel for a 50BMG is 29" to ensure all the powder is burnt & max velocity... So... 32" is the way to go IMHO...

optimal for max velocity, ok. but really, this is a budget 50(if 50 can be budget), so most people by it for sh!ts and giggles not extreme precision. so while agree that 32 is "better" the 26 makes more sense.

you are still swinging a big ####, but now it is more compact and has a change to fit in your safe/case, and the chance for a fireball is greater. a 10" AR vs a 16" AR. one is better, the other is just cooler.
 
I think it's about what works best for the individual. In theory, a shorter barrel should be more accurate, but my 32" rifle seems pretty accurate. I don't think the velocity drop will really come into play until you get out past 1000

According to what I read by Dan Lija, anyway. :)
 
The 50 bmg needs a least a 29'' barrel to burn all its powder , If you plan on shooting over 1200 yards the longer barrel may be better for you . For most people the shorter 26'' will be just fine in the accuracy and range department , it will have more muzzle flash and blast , bit more recoil too . but a bit lighter and easier to transport .

I had my Labradar set up today testng some loads for my .308 Ruger scout rifle, and as the 50 BMG was handy thought I would check the velocity of the Federal ammo I've been using.

2786 AVG velocity for the Federal 660gr ammo. I'm not sure if anyone is interested or not, but there you go. :)


The Federal isn't as accurate as the IMI I was using at the start of this thread, either. It's about 1.5 MOA tested at 470 yards. Although to be fair the IMI was shot through a new barrel and the Federal ammo was accuracy checked recently, now with a well used barrel. If I ever get the IMI ammo again, it would be nice to do a true comparison.
 
I wish canadaammo would get some more imi in, I used it to sight in and had consistent “one big hole” groups at 100. Unfortunately only bought one box, loaded up on federal and pmc when my credit card recovered from the shock of the da50.
Interesting the federal is only clocking sub 2800. The box claims 2940... the fed will do around 1-1.3 moa at 300 for me, with the occasional random flier opening it to 2+.
If you have any pmc I’d be curious about velocities, it seems real hot. Better groups than the federal but whacks you a good one, way worse (better haha,) concussion for the newbies I park in the back blast area. Waiting for some time to try out Hornady, need to get some targets out past 800.

I haven't found any IMI or PMC for months now. Maybe a year for PMC, longer for the IMI. Loved the IMI, especially the little containers the ammo comes in, I actually transfer my Federal rounds into old IMI containers. Federal seems to give a mildly sticky bolt every now and then and PMC and IMI never did, so I assumed Federal was hotter. But I never checked the velocity until now, the muzzle blast of the 50 can be detrimental to a labradar, so you need to build a little wall to shield it. :)

I had a couple of rounds go just over 2800 but none close to 2900.

Round count is in the 2500 range.
