Can anyone remember what year the really good DA headstamped 7.62 was from?I recently aquired 2 unopened cases of DA 66 headstamped 7.62.Almost 900 rds all together.Just wondering what years were the gooders.

I think '64 was the year everyone raved about. However the targets were more generous back then:) We had a little DA match (or at least a relay) at our club last year. We had been pounding the Bull and V Bull at 600 yards using target rifles. When we switched to DA for one relay the scores went from 50's with high V counts to 47's. Three highest scores were 47.3, 47.2 and 47.1. Looking at our plot sheets the points that were lost were just out of the bull and would likely have been in with the old DCRA target.

With IVI you get the odd wide 4 and sometimes a 3 out of no where. No flyers with that batch of '66 DA.

I think all DA is good, 64 is the best with no regard to lot numbers it would seem. IVI which is reportedly very good in 5.56 has always been absolute crap in 7.62. In fact I have a Norinco M14 which shoots 1/2 the moa with Chinese that is does with IVI. Must be the home ammo factor. Not too many that would not happily revert to 64 over handloads at DCRA. The good old days!

Some DA was stored all those yeasr in the ammo bumkerof a navy ship. Always nice and cool, but never frozen. Other ammow as stoed above ground and baked all summer and froze all winter.

So how it was stored turns out to be more important than the year or lot number.

IVI 7.62 would usually go bang. Most bullets have cores. Most primers are in the right way. Bullets tend to be a bit undersize compared to most barrels - around .307".

I have found some lots of IVI 5.56 that would shoot 1" groups in my target rifles.

We were testing some 5.56 ammo for a police contract by shooting it through a AR15 with a 9" barrel. We were testing for muzzle flash, so had the flash supressor off the rifle. It had a 24X scope on it, shooting off a bench at 200 yards. All the 10 shot groups were under 2". That anecdote has nothing to do with your question. It just came to mind because it has been my experience that the only way to know how a given handful of ammo will shoot is to shoot it.

About ten yeasr ago i was given a sample of every lot of DA 7.62 the CF had in inventory in significant quanity. I tested it off a bench at 200 yards with a target rifle with a 24X scope. 10 shot groups.

Just about every batch had flyers, but some were better than others. The reults may have been published by the DCRA.

I made Mexican Match out of some lots and it immediatly shot about 1" with no flyers. powder charges wre reduced about 2 grains.

Three years ago I was coaching a newbie at 300 yards. She was shooting a scoped Remchester. All bulls and mostly V's using Santa Barbara surplus 7.62.

Just before she started I offered her some match ammo. I felt foolish after that.
