Got my ridiculous 8.5 Mag fed Grizzly from CanadaAmmo. Everything is what I expected from Chinese 870 knock-off. Heavy cast receiver, etc, etc. But, the barrel is cut crooked and the bore is not... straight. (The steel is heavier to one side of the barrel)

Is this normal?
 
I will have to check mine as I have not noticed.
If your concerned about the barel you can always buy a Dlask barel for 180.00

Wanted the 12.5 initially; out of stock. I did hear these guns were heavy so I rationalized that the 8.5 would be the "lightest".

Not too concerned about the barrel, just curious. I wonder if Canada Ammo could hook me up with a better barrel as I did pay a good chunk of coin.
 
This has been an issue. A gunsmith told me that they have to check barrels before cutting for choke tubes, because they may be too thin on one side
 
I have a 50's Remington barrel that is thinner on one side at the muzzle. It ain't a big deal unless threading for chokes.

If you decide on Dlask barrel just remember that it will be heavier than the one you have. They are really thick tubes. (since you mentioned weight)
 
The weight on those guns is mostly the receiver. Not much difference in weight between an 8.5 and a 12.5.
One thing here in BC though that's different between the two is we need a min 12.5" barrel to hunt with legally
 
This is NOT a Norinco issue. It is a production gun issue. My old '60s vintage Rem 760 .30-06 has the bore cut off-center a little. The rifle has shot great all its life. My Maverick is cut a little off center too. Its only an issue if it is too thin on one side to thread for chokes. If you plan on keeping it cyl. bore then don't worry about it.
 
Interestingly I think my 8.5 tube fed is lighter than my old 12.5 HP-9. The stocks are where you can trim the most weight. Just by feel, a complete Magpul SGA with stock bolt and buttpad feels lighter than a bare Norinco buttstock with no bolt/pad. Swapping to hogue stock set made the 12.5 quite noticeably lighter.
 
Yup, I am switching the stock out. Getting a Mesa Tactical pistol grip stock with a LimbSaver butt pad. Not one for "pussy pads" but... it might be a necessity with this gun. Crossing my fingers that the OAL remains NR

Issue one solved. Now for the fore-arm. That needs to be changed at some point cost effectively... Or learn to tuck in my thumb. Trying to keep costs low or I should have just gone for the Dlask Shorty in the first place.
 
Maybe G. Mitchell will post up some pics of the hogue forend he modded to fit his 8.5" Dlask. I haven't seen it in person but it looked good in the pics he sent me.

I had no idea the receivers were cast. I'm curious why they're so much heavier than Remington receivers though. Are they thicker? If so, why?

I think the Norinco casting metallurgy is a bit "cheap" compared to the Remington process.
