DA Grizzly Mag FTE issue

I recently purchased a DA Grizzly mag 18 inch and have experienced ejection issues with a couple of loads.
I tried some Winchester bulk "Universal" and Federal 000 buck and it did not like these loads at all! The spent shells did not eject at all and I had to clear the barrel using a cleaning rod.

Is there a fix? Or do I just have to do some trial and error and figure out what loads this gun likes? So far it seems to like Federal slugs, taget and field loads.

Any comments, fixes or suggestions are welcome. I bought this gun to have some fun with but also as a bear defence gun as I live in an area where encounters with the local Ursus population in not uncommon.

Thanks to all for replies.

If i'm reading right, the shells were stuck in the barrel/chamber?

my DA doesn't like some high brass shells ,failure to eject, always got stovepipes. but if its not even pulling them out of the barrel...

other brands work fine maybe compare some spent rounds to identify a common feature?

Have a look at the ejector. Some of the Norinco shotguns had a small ejector and a misformed ejector spring. The spring in mine was not shaped properly with a sharp bend at a right angle where the ejector sticks out. Instead it was tapered.

Casey at Tac-Ord replaced the ejector and spring with a Remington.

yea...shells are getting stuck in the chamber/barrel. I will check the extractor and spring. Maybe I can get the local gun shop to order Remington parts.
Thanks

They are not drop in parts if it is actually the ejector and spring. Norinco and I presume Dominion Arms guns use a slightly smaller rivit. Casey reams the reciever and installs the normal sized parts.

The downside is it leaves an area of the reciever a bit ugly. The upside is it's the perfect reason to have the gun refinished.

LOL....had already thought of painting it..:)

Does this happen to you after you fired a few rounds or even when the barrel is cold?

I would consider polish the chamber to ensure positive extraction and see if it improves first.

Had the exact same issue with my grizzly, more then likely it is a machining imperfection in the barrel, there is a groove in the barrel just behind where the rim of the shell sits, the ejector forces the rim into the groove and locks the gun solid, take emery cloth and make it smooth like glass, if your fingernail can catch it it will make the gun lock up, actually had that on my Remington out of the box too

aaah...thanks guys. Will check the barrel for imperfections.
It is even when it is cold...but like I said only with certain loads.
It is my understanding that loads with fewer shot expand more and this seemd to be consistent with the failyures so far.

Any sugegestions on what grit I should sand with? I have never attemted any thing like this but am mechanically inclined so it is well within my comfort zone.

Thanks again all for the help.

I had an ejector spring replaced on my grizzly, gunsmith didnt do anything that would ask for refinishing.. no right through rivets or anything.

The ejector spring can sometimes be replaced without sacrificing the rivet. Brownells sell a special staking tool that often allows the remaining tip of the rivet to be peened back to hold the spring. On mine, the working surface of the ejector looked like it was fashioned from a sardine tin.

The ejector spring seems strong and the ejector moves freely and correctly. I did take a small jewelers file and squared up the edges on the ejector a bit. Hopefully this will give it a little more "bite". I also polished up the chamber a bit to see if this will help with the ejection of the spent case. Am going out tody to test it out with a couple of different loads.
Will report....

So....I went to the range yesterday and put through bout 100 rounds of varying loads and....eureka! Not one FTE!!!!

So...this is a summary of the fix.
1. Throughly clean and relube everything
2. Polish the chamber. I wet sanded started with 320 and worked up to 1000 grit
3. Using a jeweler file, I squared the face and corners of the extractor to ensure solid bite on shell

So...other then some time....the Grizz is functioning fine now.

Thanks to those CGN'ers that offered up advise!

update.....another 200 rounds through it with varying loads from 000 to 1oz slugs and no further issues......even cheap Wally bulk 2 3/4 and 3 target loads worked fine....

I just wanna throw this out there. I have not had a single problem with my mag fed Norinco. ~1000 rounds of everything. i have 2 dominion mags that work fine and the OEM norinco mag.
