Hi guys,

I just received my SOCOM 18 in the mail today from CANAM, everything on the rifle is looking good and what I expected. However, there is one issue, the safety. When I try to engage the safety when the rifle is cocked, the lever pops back out of the trigger guard immediately, and if it does stay in place, it will pop out on it's on in a matter of seconds, or with the slightest touch. I disassembled the rifle to de-grease it and see if I could figure it out. If I push up on the safety spring when the trigger group is cocked and hold the safety engaged it will work relatively well. However, as soon as I pull the trigger and reset the hammer, the safety stops working again. Tried searching but i'm not turning up much. Anyone had this happen to them? or know how to fix it? I'd like to avoid a return if possible.

Thanks.

Try this.

With the trigger group removed and hammer cocked and finger off the trigger pull back on the hammer until it completely stops, about 1/8th" and engage the safety. It should fully engage and stay that way with the trigger pulled. If this doesn't work you might have a problem and I'll let others chime in.

This is fairly normal with the Norinco trigger groups (of the 4 I had anyway and for others on the forum.) and takes a lot of setting and resetting the safety to wear it in. If I didn't feel like sitting in front of the TV working the safety in and out I just pulled the op rod back as far and as fast as I could to set the safety.

Thanks Turf,

Seems to have worked, I also tried to bend the spring a bit which might have helped. It's still a little too easy to disengage if you ask me, but that's what trigger finger discipline is for! Now I just have to figure out how to make this mag release stop fighting back when I try to take out the mag... Free fall they do not!

Odd. There should be some resistance when disengaging the safety. There's about 1/4" of travel between the safety off and safety on positions and while it shouldn't take a huge amount of force to disengage the safety I think it should take at least 3-5lbs (maybe more) of pressure.

Yeah, that's hardly anything at all. Actually this is the first time I've come across too easy to disengage. :)

Same! A friend of mine has 2 m305's and both are right bastards to engage/disengage the safety.

Ran into both problems here. I can set the safety, but a solid pull on the trigger disengages the safety and the next pull releases the hammer. The magazines ride a little high in the rifle and seem to bind up the bolt when running with snap caps. The mags are a bear to remove. We'll see how she runs at the range.

I had that exact problem with the safety on mine but changing the stock has just made it much better. It used to release the hammer if you pulled the trigger hard, now it will only release the hammer on the second pull...

So this confirms that the issue is related to the stock/ stock liner and moving things around helped...i had no time to pinpoint yet but it seems like a quick fix. The safety works fine when all is assembled outside the stock. This is the only lingering issue with mine until i fix it completely. I rarely use a safety anyways, i only shoot at ranges so i empty the mag or PROVE but it needs to be fixed regardless.

Mine still disengages the safety on the first pull and trips the hammer on the second when the trigger group is out of the stock. This is not a stock fitment issue, there is something out of spec in the trigger group.

Anyone have a solution to the safety disengaging when the trigger is pulled?

Hardly a safety at all at that point. More like an UNsafety, better off not using the safety at all knowing the gun is hot than to have a round go off with the gun point up or something scarier.

The safety spring must be tilted making hard contact on the trigger and disengaging the safety once moved.

It could be something deeper like the hole the safety lever notch sits in in the trigger housing is off spec, who knows.

Maybe try swapping the spring with a USGI one, perhaps the Chinese one has a wrong bend or flat.
