Anyone got one of these. Good starter?

At 127$ from D&L figure pick one up since I got a un used Williams peep sight and just need the 19.99 aperture front.

I had an 853 for a couple of years, dandy rifle. Very accurate. The pneumatic system was great, absolutely no felt recoil (which is odd when there is NONE) and a decent trigger. Good balance for offhand shooting. The indexing for the magazine took a little practice, and a deliberate effort to work right...but did when you got the hang of it. The 953 is an econo-version of the 853 and as far as I know, very similar. I'm not sure the barrel is the same grade, but I have a hunch that (other than the stock) most of the other components are shared.

Yeah the 953 is the slightly lower quality.

I'm very familiar with this air rifle. Used in the Canadian Cadet Marksmanship program. They don't look well made but I was always impressed by how accurate they were. The best Cadet shooters could shoot scores in the high 90's The 10 "ring' on the standard Cadet scoring target is a dot. Range 10 meters. Our unit had 10 on the scale of issue and we had few maintenance problems. They were used a couple nights a month during the training year.

Hundred and twenty seven bucks sounds like a great deal. We had the odd parent who wanted to buy them for their son or daughter to practice at home and I was told they retailed for about $250. Maybe manufactured by a company called Avanti now.

Well the ones that used in the Cadets is the 753C.

I'm asking about the 953.

I had a IZH 60 I liked the trigger, didn't like the style of how it was setup. Would liked a longer forearm and a normal stock.

I'm planning getting into small bore, but I got a mapped out 10M range indoors. Figure I could practice fundamentals indoors. I just don't want to spend a lot incase I don't like it.

Was that an inadvertent typo?...(753C)

Cadets most definitely use the Daisy 853C

They use the 753, 853/853C When I used them many moons ago they had the eye cap on the sight ( assumed the 753 ) But I want to know about the 953 model. Not about what cadets use, or the 753 or 853 model.

It's a great little rifle. Low price however comes with a few drawbacks:
- plastic feels cheap (on the plus side it's very light - good for a kid)
- short length of pull suitable for a kid or a small person, I need to build an extension to be comfortable
- mediocre sights (as far as I know it is possible to get this rifle with peep sights, but mine came with a fiberoptic front)
- pretty useless plastic scope rail

On the plus side - it's the same powerplant as 853c (different barrel), easy to ####, very quiet, for the price and considering crappy sights its astonishingly accurate at 10m.

It's a fantastic inexpensive starter rifle.

Has anyone found the rear "853" sight available for sale, to install on a 953? If the final difference between the two is barrel and stock, and there was still money to be saved, I'd be interested in a 953...

Non-cadet Biathlon students use 853s in droves - if I could kit out a 953 for less, that would be "good enough" (the 853 is about $350).

Edit: Found 853 rear peep sight online for $25, plus shipping from States. Compatible with the 953.

I would say go for it. I've just got a DAISY 953 from D&L this weekend and it shoots one ragged hole at 20ft with Williams peep sight and target front globe, prone support. You will find tons of info, trigger mods, disassembly procedures and dedicated owners on the internet. I'm happy with mine and looking to get a higher model like 753 or 853C with wooden stock and Lothar Walther barrel in the future.

I just picked up a daisy 953 with a 3x9x32 mm scope at TSC for 51 bucks + taxes. There is a few online stores that sell the rear micrometer sight and the globe front with different inserts. Also look for the mods on the trigger, its not bad, I have used worse but for any accuracy get the trigger done and watch your groups close up more.
