This BBgun is really crappy!

My old 1937 single shot was great, accurate and I could reload by carrying the lead BB in my mouth and spit one down the barrel as I cocked.

The Red Rider makes noise when the steel shot rolls when the thing is tipped up or down, alerting my bird feeder thief to scram. I could accept that but the rear sight is flimsy and when I put up a target, it was 6 " off at 20 feet.

I know that the answer is a .177 pellet rifle.

Still, I hope to put a decent adjustable sight on it as I have a big jug of Daisy coppered steel shot to use up.

considering its mostly meant for children and over the years the quality has changed I would not expect much from them. I find it fun from time to time to pull out mine and shoot some cans

I have one, but I can't say how it shoots, mostly because I kind of forget. I have one of those really cheap looking "Marlin" BB rifles that shoots dead on point of aim across my basement. Definitely more luck than fine craftsmanship. I have three or four BB rifles that I stoke up and shoot from my gun room door across the basement into a box with a towel backstop. I have one that looks almost exactly like a 94, the Red Ryder, and the Marlin. I also have a couple of pistols in CO2 that I shoot BB's with. One is made for BB's. It is a dead ringer for a Walther PPK, I think it is.

From what I remember, the Red Ryder always made noise when you tipped it up or down. But today the Red Ryder is made quite cheap and taking one look at it one shouldn't expect much.
When I was a kid I also had a model 90. It was quite accurate and much better made.

ahah bb red ryder for killing bird? nahhh not a good idea. If you want to go cheap and accurate to 20to30 feet just get a P17 pistol single shot and practice my friend same price as the ryder, It shoot .177 pellet and dead accurate . I have two bb ryder and they are what they are fun little gun that shoot the most accurate for bb's but for hunting nahhh i don't think so.

Bottom line~they're toys, little else. I bought one myself about 25 years ago, and it actually shoots pretty well...but about 5 years ago, bought one for my kids to use and it's a complete piece of crap. Neither one is, or was ever well-suited to any pest control duty. Never even tried to be honest. I spent a couple of summers with a Crosman 760, and a couple of summers with a Crosman 1377 (+ shoulder stock) and both were capable, accurate air guns. No-frills, pneumatic pumpers but deadly accurate and consistent. Some of the best, most carefree times of my life..great memories. Spent the last summer hunting frogs to use as bait for smallmouth bass. Would go shoot 5 or 6 of them, turn each one into about 4 pcs. of bait with a dull pocket knife, then go fishing all afternoon. I wonder if there is iPhone app that allows kids to do the same thing now? :)
