I recently took a fall with one of my rifles, and the muzzle just outside the crown got a good ding in it. it is quite severe and i'm worried about it affecting the bore diameter or causing the bore to be miss-shaped at the crown, although to the eye it does not appear miss-shaped. The rifle is already at minimum legal length. do i need a new barrel? or can something like this be repaired? I don't want to fire it untill i can assure it is safe.

Depending on the rifle, it should be easy enough to correct without shortening the barrel. If the ding does not actually touch the bore, the damage is unlikely to be the cause for alarm. A 'smith could try a plug gauge, or reamer pilot, to see if the edge of the bore is deformed.

The human eye is a remarkable gauge. If you examine it closely, you will be able to see whether or not the bore has been damaged. If there is enough to be dangerous, it would be very visible.

I concur with Guntech. Shoot it.
