Hey guys, just lookig for some help here. So I always normally clean my Noveske Barrel with a bore snake, but once in a while I run the rod through with the bristtles to break everything free. I have been told to watch carefully so you do not hit your bore with the rod. I am currently looking for a rod guide to keep it centered, who makes a good one? But my big question is, how hard would you have to rub up against your bore to actually damage it? I have came in contact with the bore but nothing major just a slight rub up against it while pushing it through. The rod is not hard metal either. Thanks

Youll do more harm with a bore snake then you will with most cleaning rods since alot of them are aluminum.I personally use a tipton carbon fiber one.

would a gun slick cleaning rod be appropriate to use in an AR15 barrel?

my understanding was that so long as the metal used for the rod made of a less harder material than the barrel, it shouldn't scratch.

but i am almost certain i am mistaken.

x2 for the Tipton carbon fiber rods.

JP Enterprises makes a really nice bore guide for AR15/10's, you can get them from Brownells.

I fail to understand what damage a couple of rub from a cleaning rod can do to a barrel design to shoot 10 000- 20 000 round... :s I don't care that the bullet is copper hell even lead... it's like suggesting that pushing your car in the driveway for 100 feet will do more damage to it mechanically then driving it 100 000 miles.

If I am wrong please educate me but I just can't see it.

Take a look at the last inch of rifling on mosin nagants & you will have all the proof you need that a rod can wear a bore.
The two are not remotely comparable. You are comparing a 60 years [or more] old barrel, with 60 years [or more] old bore craftsmanship knowledge), all likely shooting bimetal corrosive ammo, and which has all likely seen tough combat, to a few month old one used ever so gently (today's CQB or IPSC match are heaven compared to the Russian front). Replacing the bore on a mosin is also pretty much mission impossible whereas replacing the barrel on an AR is trivial to do...

I carried the same FNC1 for 10 years, cleaned with with a steel rod almost every second working day. It shoot as well in year 10 as in year 1, with no barrel replacements.

If you want an indepth look at waht goes on inside your barrel, I highly recommend checking out
Steve Boelter's execellent article on cleaning. It really goes beyond the basics and covers tools,
do's and dont's, bore guides, different types of cleaning rods etc.

It is focused on rimfire, but well worth the time to have a read.

how can a brass rod with brass bristles damage a steel barrel, a 20k noveske barrel no less... I think we are babying our rifles too much, they are built to withstand a hell lot more abuse!

the military uses brass rods with bronze or brass bristles, how many times has a cleaning rod gone down a C7/C8 or C6 and C9? Ask a gun smith, no damage from it.

yup! thats why i bought a brass set for cleaning my personal rifles. if its good enough for a "use it like you stole it" rifle then its definately good enough for my little collection.
