I have the RCBS it works decent, no problems. One day I will upgrade it to a bench mounted one of some kind. I was under the assumption that the metal sliding contraption was to prevent detonation of the tray if the primer being seated went off. If that actually works it would be something to consider.

I have the RCBS bench mounted unit with the tubes rather than the strips. It's great with good positive seating. I wouldn't worry about 100 primers in a tube. Besides RCBS, both Dillon and Hornady progressives use a tube as well as many others.

I have the RCBS that takes shell holders and hate it. It is a royal pain when you get a jammed primer. The whole thing needs to be disassembled to get the stuck primer out of the case and the case out of the shell holder. I rarely use it now and rely on my old cheapy Lee hand held.

Yeah I remember looking at the RCBS and the Lee Precision in the store years ago. The RCBS was a lot more expensive so I bought the Lee Precision.

Now I wish I got the RCBS. Everything Lee brand that I own has been replaced by quality gear. Hard to justify wasting money on Lee stuff now.

I had a tube of 50 explode on me I'm lucky to have my eyes I still have primer cups in my neck that they can't safely remove I also lost a big chunk of skin on my arm from the fragments of the tube. I would worry.

I have the lyman hand primer. I think they call it the EZ-Prime or something like that. Works super well. I prime while watching tv, usually 1000 case at a time. I like it so much I bought a 2nd one when Woodbury Outfitters messed up their canadian pricings a while ago, so I have a backup in case my 1st one breaks or something.

I had the old-style Lee Ergo-Prime and was happy. I just got the new version and it's great, easier to stow away also:

Thanks I need a new one..

My old round tray Lee's worked well enough for many years, not sure how old they are, mid 80's or so. Replaced a couple of arms, one had the shellholder head break off finally. For what they were worth they did well. As I needed one for a replacement and decided I didn't like the square tray version, I tried a Hornady, needed to use that style because of my 450-400NE, had to use a shellholder. One I got was a total piece of junk. It wound up in the garbage. All I can say is, assemble it and check it out before you leave the store with it. Tried the RCBS universal one with jaws, cases cocked in it, the trays were a serious struggle to get swapped out, wasn't impressed. It wound up in the garbage. So, I looked around at what is out there and picked up a 21st Century for the old round Lee trays, as I still had those. Lids are loose, but they are fine other than that, and I can live with that. The tool itself is awesome, made properly and works like a charm. Not cheap, but, nothing properly made is. They only build it for the new trays now, but, it is a properly built tool.

I picked up the frankford Arsenal hand priming tool from Cabelas US and have been pretty impressed with it so far. It's very solid and of good quality and comes with all of the shell holders and pieces you need in a nice case. Another nice feature is the ability to adjust seating depth through the hand primer for a consistent seating depth everytime. though not neccesary, it's certainly nice to have and gives me piece of mind for consistent seating depth everytime.

If you buy it from Cabelas US the prices are much cheaper, ended up paying $70 CAD for it and picked up a couple other products for cheaper cause it's around $20 USD for shipping so made it worth my time.

the RCBS universal Hand primer is also a solid unit. it's nice to not have to worry about shell holders.

Dillon and Hornady in their progressive presses use tubes for primer storage and feeding as well, HOWEVER, there is a big difference with the RCBS unit in question. The sitting operation, which is the most likely to detonate a primer, is not near the tube to cause sympathetic detonation of the primers in the tube. The Dillon 650, for example, is using the rotary primer feeding
device which makes it nearly impossible to cause cross detonation with the primers in the tube. The point to be made is that tubes in close proximity to primer seating device are more dangerous than tubes away from feeding stations.

I have the RCBS bench unit as well, it's not bad. My other primer tools are the really old Lee that use the threaded shell holders, you put primers in one at a time.

I use to use the RCBS hand tool that you loaded 1 at a time, good kit but not convenient. Then I bought the RCBS Universal. Thousands upon thousands primed without any difficulty and you don't need special holders. Considering the RCBS bench tool as arthritis is starting to have a go at me.
